It was exactly the way Kurt had imagined kissing Finn Hudson a hundred times. Walking up to him, taking his face in his hands and pouring all of his passion and frustration into that one stolen moment. Kurt huddled against the lockers, trembling. He realized now if he had kissed Finn the way Karofsky had just kissed him, Finn would have been just as devastated. He sank to the floor, quietly choking back tears. Kurt finally understood Finn's revulsion.
Eventually, Kurt composed himself enough to stand up. He glimpsed his reflection in the mirror and gingerly touched his bruised lips. Something reflected in his own eyes startled Kurt and he realized that he understood Karofsky now, too.
Courage.
Wordlessly, slushie in hand, Kurt walked up to Karofsky and threw it, taking care to aim for his clothes and not his face. Just as quickly, he turned and walked away.
"HEY!"
Karofksy's thundering voice followed him down the hall. Kurt quickened his steps, but not too fast. He didn't want Karofsky to lose sight of him.
"I'm talking to you, freak!"
Kurt ducked into the backstage area of the auditorium. A moment later, he heard the door open and close again and knew he had been followed. He stood his ground as Karofsky ran up on him, grabbed his shirt and pulled his fist back ready to punch him.
"You wanted a second kiss. Take it." Karofsky hesitated. All of the fear, confusion and longing Kurt had seen before flickered across his face. Kurt bit his lip and stepped closer. "Only this time without shoving me into a locker first."
Karofsky looked into Kurt's eyes and there was no judgment, no condemnation, only an unspoken understanding. Here, in this moment, if he wanted to kiss another guy, it would be okay.
It would be-safe.
Karofsky gazed into Kurt's face. The low lighting shaded his eyes more blue than green. Exaggerated the curve of his cheek. Touched on lips that were slightly parted, expectant. Willing, Karofsky realized with a feeling of surprise and wonder.
"Dave."
They were close enough that he felt Kurt's breath warm against his throat when his name was spoken. Karofsky shuddered and closed his eyes. When he opened them, he grabbed Kurt's shoulders, intending to shove him out of the way. Instead, he pinned Kurt to the wall and kissed him, hard and desperate.
Kurt moaned softly against Karofsky's mouth. Rejection. Frustration. Longing. Oh, yes, Kurt thought back on his past year with Finn, he understood Dave Karofsky very well.
