Hermione let out a sigh as she closed a large math textbook. Normally she would be happy going to bed with all of her homework completed, everything as it should be, and all of the work assigned her in a neat stack on her immaculate desk. The problem being that she was only three days into the summer holidays and all of her assignments were complete, so now she had nothing to do for the next five and a half weeks. She and her mother could make biscuits the next day, or go to the park for a few hours the next day, but she would end up back in her clean lavender room, sitting alone on her quilted bed. Just like last summer. And the one before that.

It wasn't that she didn't like her mother, after all she was one of her best friends, but sometimes she wanted to have some her own age. Someone she could play tag with, that would invite her to their house for tea party, that she could share her books and facts with. Her mother says sharing is caring, but everyone at school always thought she was just a show off. That is really not what it was about. Hermione just wanted to share with everyone so they could learn too, but then they left her all alone on the playground, or laughed at her behind adults backs. Even her teacher from last year, Mrs. Howe, stopped visiting her under the shade of the elm trees on the playground, only a month into last school year. Hermione found it easier during school, she could get away with distracting herself with school work, but now her books were closed and the library would be closed tomorrow, so she would just be re reading Robinson Crusoe, which she had already memorized.

She dejectedly changed into her pajamas, folded her dirty clothes and brushed her hair 27 times (she felt that it was the proper number to untangle all sections of her hair without being excessive). As she laid down on her pillow, she faced her window and caught just the tail of a shooting star. Knowing that the star was only a rock falling through the atmosphere, and had no magic power, she made a wish

I want this summer to be different, she thought as she closed her eyes, I don't want to be sitting alone in my bedroom next summer. I want friends.
