I remember it all very well lookin back
It was the summer in dog years I turned 2
We lived down an alley between 2 shacks
On the outskirts of London, it's true.
We didn't have shelter or enough food
To say the least we had to fight for hatvr can!
Then mama went out and begged and stole
To get me as much food as she can.
Mama washed and stroked and curled me hair
And she made sure me eyes were shown, then I stepped into the outside
Of the alleyway where it as old, dirty, and worn.
She told me to drink as much water from a puddle as I could
Standin back from the shallow water
There stood a grown dog where a half gown puppy had stood
She said "Here's your one chance Colleen, don't let me down
Here's your one chance Colleen, don't let me down."
Mama groomed me one more time on me neck
And she kissed me cheek
Then I saw the tears wellin up in her troubled eyes
When she started to speak
She looked at a pitiful alley
And then she looked at me and took a ragged breath
She said, "Your pa's run off and I'm real sick
And I know I'm courting death
She kissed me one more time and said
"To thine own self be true."
And I shivered as I watched a roach crawl across
The bottom of me foot follwed by uite a few.
It sounded like somebody else that was talkin
Askin, "Mama what do I do?"
She said, "Just be nice to the people, Colleen,
And they'll be nice to you."
She said "Here's your one chance Colleen, don't let me down
Here's your one chance Colleen, don't let me down."
Lord forgive me for what I do, but if you want out
Well its up to you
Now don't let me down I just know you're gonna move uptown."
Well, that was the last time I saw me Mom
The night I left that alley between the shacks.
The dog catcing people came and chased her out,
Mama died and I came back
But the wheels of fate had started to turn
And for me there was no way out
And it wasn't very long til I knew exactly
What me Mama was talkin about
I knew what I had to do but I made meself this solemn vow
That I would be a fine dog someday
Though I didn't know when or how
I couldn't see spending the rest of my life
With me head hung down in shame, you know
I as born more than just London trash
And Colleen was me name
She said "Here's your one chance Colleen, don't let me down
Here's your one chance Colleen, don't let me down."
It wasn't very long after a mysterious man
Took me in off the street
And one week later I was walking on 2 legs
And beating up terrorists with me legs and hands
I became a member of his crime fighting team
we stop evil whenever we can.
Then I got me a brand new home
In the British Prime Minister's flat
And I haven't done bad
Now in this world there's a lot of self-righteous hippocrites
That would call me trash
And criticize Mama for turning me out
No matter how little we had
But though I aint had to worry bout nothin
For nigh on about two years
I can still hear the desperation in me poor
Mamas voice ringin in my ear
She said "Here's your one chance Colleen, don't let me down
Here's your one chance Colleen, don't let me down."
Lord, forgive me for what I do
But if you want out well its up to you
Now don't let me down
Your Mamas gonna help you uptown."
I guess she did.
