I'll Be Home Soon
Dearest Tonks,
So many moments, so many memories. I often wonder when and where it all started, but if I took the time to try and remember, I would never leave. I would never do what my heart has been aching for me to do for so long. But I need you to know that I'm grateful for all you did for me, Tonks. For making my life wonderful. For giving me strength and comfort as I dwell on my past. But now, Tonks, now I can't go on. My heart yearns for them. Every day. It's killing me slowly. They understood. My brothers. My sister. They were there from the beginning, and now they're gone. I can't stand the pain anymore. But I couldn't go peacefully without letting you know that I love you Tonks, and I hope you can accept my decision without question. Wherever I go, know that I will always be watching over you, and everyone else.
With love,
Remus John Lupin
Remus tied the tear-stained letter to the owl waiting patiently beside him with shaky hands, the owl blissfully unaware of the fate that would soon meet the man beside him. 'For Tonks,' Remus whispered hoarsely. 'Tonks.' And with that, the owl took off, slowly becoming smaller and smaller, until it was completely gone.
Remus got up and walked through the gate into the Godric's Hollow Cemetery. He walked and walked until he found what he was looking for. In front of him stood tombstones and a little patch of earth. The tombstone to his left read:
James and Lily Potter
1960 – 1981
Devoted Couple
Loyal Friends
Remus was personally insulted with what had been written on their tombstone. It did absolutely no justice to his friends. James. He was loyal, smart, funny, caring, and most importantly, non-judgmental. He stuck with Remus after Remus had told his best friends about his lycanthropy. They had even become illegal animaguses for him. Lily…the sister he never had. She too had accepted him with open arms. She was so sweet, beautiful, kind, caring funny, smart…the list could go on and on.
Remus turned his head to the tombstone directly in front of him.
Sirius Black
R.I.P.
That's it? Remus thought bitterly. Like the tombstone before it, this didn't even start to describe Remus' other best friend. Sirius, just like Lily and James, had accepted Remus without question, and had also become an illegal animagus. Remus fondly remembered waking up in the Hospital Wing after every full moon to find his best friends anxiously waiting to see if he was ok.
Well, two friends. Remus thought. Peter betrayed Lily and James. He is no friend of mine.
At last Remus' eyes came to rest of the patch of dirt to the right of Sirius' grave. At school, the Marauders had always said they would be buried together. Now is the time to fulfill their wishes, Remus thought, as he transfigured a rock on the ground into a sharp, silver dagger. With a final look at hisfriends' graves, Remus lay down on the bit of earth beside Sirius' tombstone, his eyes now filled with tears.
The sun just peaked over the horizon, creating a beautiful, blood red sunset. And Remus drew his last breath before plunging the dagger into his chest, as his final tears leaked out of his eyes. Remus' body went limp, blood already starting to stain the earth beneath him, as the world around him went black, his departing words lingering in the silent air. 'I'll be home soon, guys…'
A/N: Wow, this one came to me out of nowhere. I was so close to tears at the end…I've always thought Remus might someday crack from the pressure of the War and his past and stuff…
