IT DOESN'T MATTER

I long ago accepted the fact that I was invisible to the real world. Anyone with any dignity in them would not look my way, let alone help me as I was chased into trash strewn alley. It didn't take much to be damned in this city. Scratch that. It doesn't take much for a woman to be damned anywhere. One move, and then BOOM, you're done. Goodbye chivalry, goodbye goodwill, goodbye gentleness. Hello disgust.

You can then understand my shock as I watched my impromptu rescuer pin the last of my attackers down by the tails of his coat as he tried to crawl away. He struggled to release himself of the garment even as the bulky shadow reached down and grabbed him by the neck, yanking him to his feet. The man's breath came in quick and shallow sobs as he gasped out, "She's just a whore, just a fucking whore!"

The words had barely escaped his lips when he was slammed roughly into the wall across from me. A low, guttural whisper snarled its way across the night into the ears of the conscious before the last of would-be rapists fell.

"A lady is a lady."

The shadow turned to me, and I felt firm hands grasp my upper arms, pulling me gently to my feet.

"No matter the circumstance."
