Open up the temple doors
Where do I begin?
Hark-the deity aglow
Cleanse us of our sin
Greet the morning's blazing sun
Ink blots dance the scroll
Elevate the intellect
Purify the soul
Teach the pupil in the day
Reap their minds at night
Practice spells again and more
Until they've got it right
Advise the ill of mind and form
Spread the wealth of thought
Cast aside your personal qualms
Fight what troubles need be fought
Speak the dead a loving tongue
Make passing oh so dear
Open the mouth and free the voice
Afterlife is near
Sweep away your footsteps
Exit backwards from the temple
Leave behind no signs of life
Be at least this thoughtful
Lay to rest yourself at last
Give time for soul to mend
Wake early in the darkened morn'
And start it once again.

Footnotes:
Priests commonly exited the temple of a great god or deity backwards while sweeping their footsteps away in the name of respect.
Opening of a mummy's mouth was a priest ritual which was believed to allow the deceased to speak, eat, and breathe in the next life.
