Disclaimer: I don't own Leverage, but they got a third season, so I don't care!!!
A/N: Okay guys, this is just a short little something that I came up with this morning while thinking about last night's episode. Slight spoilers, nothing major.
Hold Me Together
Nate continued to scan the crowd as he stepped up to the casket. There was still no one who seemed to jump out at him and scream "murderer". But that didn't mean they weren't there.
As he stood there, looking down at Sophie, lying there seemingly lifeless, the breath froze in his chest and for a moment, it wasn't a con. It wasn't an attempt to protect Sophie from whoever was trying to kill her. For a second, standing there, hand on the lid of the casket, the woman he loved, Sophie Devereaux was dead.
Nate knew it wasn't true, but there she was, and he could imagine how cold her skin would feel if she was really gone. He would never see her smile again, never hear her laugh, or feel the touch of her skin on his. For one second, he had lost, and the loss was more than he was ever willing to lose.
And even though reality returned to him and he knew as he closed the lid of the casket that Sophie was fine and she was going to stay that way, Nathan Ford also knew that there was too much of a chance that this could be her fate. They were making more enemies every day, and if one had come after Sophie, then who was to say that another wouldn't?
It was too easy for Nate to lose everything that he had. He had already lost the world when Sam died…what would happen if something were to happen to Sophie?
As he walked away from the casket, scanning the crowd again, glad that he was wearing sunglasses so that no one would see how his eyes were slightly more watery than normal, Nate swore that he would never let anything happen to his grifter, because she was the glue that held him together…
