There she was again. Elphaba was crouched in the corner crying onto her favorite book. Earlier that day Elphaba's best friend had avoided looking at her all through class and when Elphaba asked her why she was ignoring her she had just whispered sorry and run off. Elphaba really was getting tired of being picked on . Her self esteem was about the size of a peanut now. And She didn't even like peanuts! The only place where Elphaba really felt in was in her books. In her books Elphaba was never picked on , teased, or ignored. Here she could escape from her father who didn't even want her in the family. But Elphaba coulden't read all day and hide from reality she had to go to school and do her chores. But those few hours that she read she felt like she was in heaven.

Elphaba envied her sister sooo much. Nessa had loads of friends and her teachers and the whole town loved her. They called her the tragically beautiful girl. They always found it hard to believe that they were sisters.

"Elphaba go to the butchers shop to get some ham for dinner" her father yelled up to her . Elphaba set aside her book, wiped the tears from her cheeks and put on her jacket. The butcher shop was about three miles from her house but if Elphaba wasn't back in an hour her father would send her to her room without dinner.

As Elphaba was walking she saw the normal things she saw everyday. People trying not to make eye contact with her, people whispering about her when she walked by and all the birds in the trees would fly away as she passed the trees. But Elphaba saw something new. A girl about Elphaba's age was caring a large card board box up to a big house. Elphaba looked over and when the girl looked at her she smiled at Elphaba. Elphaba was astounded no one had ever smiled at her before. Suddenly Elphaba felt happy " she smiled she actually smiled at me " Elphaba thought in her mind.
