Fallen Angels

The waves softly lapped beneath him. The sloshing of them slowly began to soothe his racing heart. Opening his emerald eyes he looked at the scattered colored sky of the sunset. Taking a deep sigh he began to sit down on the golden particles of sand. Reaching out to the rising water level, the tide caressed his fingers. Once more he sighed, heavily. From behind him he heard the soft footfalls of another of his kind. Not even acknowledging their presence, he continued to watch the surf touch his pale skin.

"Quatre..." The low, monotone voice spoke out. He didn't even turn to look at him.

"Yes?" His voice was filled with sadness and great pain. The stranger watched his best friend tune in nothing but the waves and his heart ached.

"You know...you'll never feel it." His dark green eyes looked at his best friend in sorrow.

"I know...but still...to wish." He sighed.

"Oh Quatre..." He paused, then choosing his words carefully. "That girl, you've been watching, she seems...lost..."

"They're all lost, Trowa. This war is loosing all the children...none of them are innocent any longer." Trowa went to speak then another pair of footfalls appeared then their voice.

"That's untrue Quatre...that girl Heero's watching...she's very innocent."

"Compared to most...but remember just twenty years ago. In those sparse twenty years look at what has changed! Her innocence is no where's near the children's of the last generation." The two still standing looked at one another with sad eyes, knowing fully well that he was right. Quatre still continued, tears building up in the corners of his eyes. "Was anyone watching who started this war?! Isn't that our job? The one the Almighty gave us? Yet...we can't stop anything... Why did He give us such a task, when we can't intervene? To stop the horrors they don't realize they are starting?"

Unnoticed a slightly shorter man wandered up to the three, hearing Quatre's monologue.

"We are to give the people hope, nothing more." The three turned to the newcomer surprised. Then Quatre's anger and sadness shaded the surprise once more.

"How are we supposed to give hope when they can't see us? Feel us in their presence?" The man sighed, and tucked a piece of his black hair behind his ear.

"They do know we're here, in a way. All of them, whether they believe or not, have some conscientious thought that someone is watching over them, that somebody cares—that, in itself, helps many."

"But..."

"You can't argue with his logic, Quatre; he's right you know." Duo said smiling, his violet eyes twinkling before blanketing out once more. "The people on this planet need someone, anyone, whether they can see them or not, to care and love them."

"And we are those people Quatre, that's why the Eternal sent us as Watchers." Trowa said looking deep into the emerald eyes of his best friend. Quatre looked at his three friends in amazement. His bright green eyes slowly beginning to loose the forever sadness in them. Turning out into the now darkened sky, he stared for moments on end then turned back to the three.

"You're all right. As usual—yet I still can't help wondering sometimes..." The one with glittering violet eyes placed a hand on his shoulder and smiled.

"We all do, buddy, we all do..."
