"Is it a boy or a girl?" Rufus asked. Lily stared at him, speechless. What was he talking about? "What are you talking about?" She finally managed to say.
"Oh I don't know, take a guess." He replied. Lily stood there thinking for a minute. "What did CeCe tell you?"
Rufus was furious at this point. "Why didn't you tell me? After all these years, I have to find out from your mother that we have a child together!" Tears started to run down Lily's face. "Oh my God. Did she tell you that? She paused for a second. "I became pregnant after we broke up. I'm positive she isn't yours." Rufus shook his head.
"So it's a girl then. Who is it? I have a right to know who my child is." Lily raised her head and looked into Rufus's eyes. "Yes it's a girl. It's Serena."
"Hello Rufus it's me again, just calling to see if you're ok. I'm so sorry about the other night; I should have told you earlier. I can understand if you're mad at me for letting Serena and Dan date, but Serena probably isn't even your child. Please call me back; I'm really worried about you." The message played just as Dan walked in the door. He froze in his place and thought for a moment. 'What? Serena could possibly be my sister?' He dialled his fathers mobile and placed the phone to his ear. It rang for a second, until Rufus finally answered. "Hey Dan, how are you?"
"Not so good actually, uh, there's a message on the answering machine about how Serena could be your daughter? Would you like to explain what's going on?" There was a pause from the other end. "Damn, I told Lily to stop calling. Look Dan, I didn't ask for this to happen. It may not even be true. And please do not go and tell Serena."
"I can't believe this. Why weren't we told about this earlier when we were, ahem, dating?"
"Lily only told me last night. Look, we'll talk about this when I get home." There was a click from the other end. As soon as Dan hung up, he dialled another number. It was Serena's.
"Hello?"
"Hey Serena, it's me, Dan."
"Oh hey, how are you?"
"I could be better. Look, apparently my dad could possibly be your father or something like that, which means, we could be siblings."
"What? Dan, what are you talking about?"
"I think our parents met up last night, CeCe told my dad that he and Lily had a child together, although he didn't know. But Lily doesn't know if my dad is actually the father. She's pretty sure he isn't. And the child is you."
"Um, I'm going to have to speak to my mom. Call you later." Click.
It had been a whole week and he had not seen Serena, not even at school. There was no new information about what was going on. His head was filled with nothing except the fact that Serena could actually be a Humphrey.
"Hello?" Lily picked up.
"Hey Lily. How are you? Would Serena be around?" Dan asked.
"I'm good thankyou Dan, and no sorry, Serena isn't home. I think she's staying at Blair's."
"Oh, it's just that she hasn't been answering my calls."
"Well I'm sure she's fine, just keep trying."
"OK then. Thanks Lily. Bye" Dan hung up and walked to the window. He looked outside into the red orange clouds. He picked up the phone once more and dialled Blair's number.
"Dan, why are you calling me?" Blair answered.
"Nice to talk to you too. Is Serena there?" Dan asked.
"No, I haven't seen her for a couple of days. Why?"
"Lily said that she was staying at your house, and she hasn't been answering my calls."
"Well I haven't seen her OK; she's probably with Poppy or something." Blair hung up. Dan shook his head and decided to take a walk. Outside the skyline was now a dark purple, fading into darkness.
