Divine Retribution

The rain came down mercilessly upon them that grim afternoon, the skies above a tumultuous grey vortex of cloud and wind. The ground was an ungainly mess of mud and blood, dirty water and the bowels and excrements of men. He trekked through the muck, muscles rolling under wet armor every few minutes as he swung his axe at an oncoming sage, thrust his axe toward a soldier with the gall to bar his path. They fell with ease as their own entrails and fluids spilled out of gaping wounds to mix with the sea of death surrounding them.
Death, he thought grimly as another nameless man fell before him. Death to all those who would destroy her life.
He stopped for a moment, rested his axe against his shoulders and glanced heavenwards once again. A flash of lightning tore at the sky, the deep rumble of thunder following soon after. He took it as a sign of God's approval and laughed heartily as another brute ran at him. He grinned and readied himself.
He had found a reason to fight once more.
