The in Between

The in Between

She felt her mind wander. She saw her body from outside her body.

"You'll die." The voices said, the congregation of voices a thrum of noise that surrounded her.

"I know." She replied. She watched as the light of the sun burned away her physical body.

"Then why? The point of human life is to live. And when you live, you greed and gorge yourselves on you own success. Until the humans find themselves invaluable—you crave to live, and live forever." Hands gripped her body, slowly pulling away at the veins that still flowed boiling blood. "Why do you want such death?"

She closed her eyes as a serene smile parted her lips. Her memory flashed back, a blonde haired girl—whose smile lit up the room. Filled warmth in all the dark places. Put hope back into hopeless souls.

She saw the innocent eyes that peered up at her. Not just with trust, but with the love that had transcended hundreds of deaths and thousands of years shown brightly.

When she opened her eyes, she watched as the last of her body was dismembered before turning to look to the voices' origin.

"For her," Chickane whispered, a smile on her lips and a determination in her eyes, "I'd die again and again, just to see her again and again."

"What is the reasoning of death?"

"To die for the one you love." The last trace of Chikane Himemiya's existence was a lone tear that flew in the wind.

A burst of pure, white light spread across the area.

The Rebirth had begun.

She got to see Himeko again.
