Joy Comes in the Morning

You're awake. You shouldn't be, but you are.
The soft hum and the slow methodical beep of the monitors next to you are what make you wake up in the first place. They cast a soft, warm glow over your sleeping husband's face, a look of pure contentment.
Happiness.
Shay would've been over the moon. You and Casey had finally settled down, tied the knot and started a family.
You can't help but wonder what it would be like if she hadn't died. If you and Matt would've never broken up. If you'd never adopted Louie. You can't help but wonder if she and Severide would've tried for another baby and if it would've been successful.
You learned long ago not to dwell on the what if's.
Severide was finally happy and settled down. He and Anna had gotten married and were finally content. You think about how happy Shay would've been for him.
You think about how happy Shay would've been for everyone.
They say that joy comes in the morning and you can't help but think that it's only fitting that Elizabeth Shay Casey arrived the morning after May 13th.
And it's only then when your husband pulls you out of your thoughts, that you realize he's awake when he says:
"She would've been so proud of you, babe."
