What Freak Said

The next day, I went to visit the Freak at the hospital; when I walked in, everyone knew whom I was. In his room, Freak was sitting in his bed talking to Fair Gwen. He looked upset, while Fair Gwen looked like she was about to cry.

I walked into the room like a total bonehead and asked what was wrong. Fair Gwen looked over at Freak and then left the room saying, "Kevin has something to tell you."

I walked over and sat in the chair where Fair Gwen had been sitting. "What's up Freak?" I asked.

Freak leaned over closer to me. "They're not getting my robot body." Freak told me.

"So, they'll get you one later, right?" I asked.

"No, there isn't one." Freak snapped, sounding a little angry with me. I couldn't blame him; I acted like such an idiot.

"So what does that mean?" I asked, not nervous at the moment.

"Max, I'm going to die; my body isn't big enough to keep all my organs." Freak said, lowering his voice.

"You can't die." I said, like a complete idiot.

"My mom and I are moving to California; they doctors say that the weather will keep me alive for a little while longer." Freak said, ignoring my comment. "We're leaving tomorrow morning." He added.

So, that was what Freak said; I didn't bother to say anything I just left, not even saying goodbye. I couldn't believe that Freak was leaving; there would be no more 'Freak the Mighty.' I would just be Maxwell Kane, the kid with no brain.

Gwen's Letter

The letter came a few days letter, post marked Pasadena, California. I didn't even know where that was until I looked it up on a map. The letter was from Gwen.

"Dear Maxwell,

I just wanted you to know -there is no easy way to say this- that Kevin died late last night. I'm sure he would have liked to be there with you, but moving here was in the best interest of his health. I am truly sorry for everything.

Gwen"

That was all the letter said, I had to read it over a couple of times until I finally understood everything. Freak was gone, forever; I was stuck here, like an idiot.

So, that was how everything changed. I wrote a book and everything, hey I can even read one now.
