Prologue
His eyes roll back and forth, reading the tiny text of the Ba Sin Se Times. This specific issue has been read over and over again. He can practically recite the whole story. His heavy breath can be heard all the way from across the richly furnished living room, where his wife is feeding their newborn daughter, just born a week ago. The mother notices her dear husband's worried face.
"Please, stop reading that paper, Faye." He folds up the paper and places it on the side table next to his chair.
"But, what if she really is the one? What happens, then?"
"We'll be there to protect her, always." Her careful hands stroke the child's head gingerly and lifts the tiny girl against her shoulder. She starts patting the baby's back, waiting to hear a burp.
"No, we won't. Meili, you know we won't! If she is the one, she will be in more danger than we can defend against!"
"Faye, stop."
"Meili! I can't lose her! We can't lose her like we lost Kulu! I-"
"Faye!" Meili shouts. Tears crawl to the sides of her eyes. Her hand has stopped patting and she hangs her head low. The tears stream down her face in a steady stream as the father watches.
"Meili… I'm sorry. I know that was a hard time for you. I just… I want the best for her. For our Mita." Meili nods and continues to burp the little girl.
Faye relaxes back down into his seat. He can't help but glance to the side to read the headline one last time before putting it to rest for good.
