Author's Note:
Hey everyone, just a quick one shot I felt like writing. I may or may not scrap this. I may or may not improve on this or use it in a OOT fanfic I plan to write (unconfirmed). Give it a read and tell me what you think. Thanks, and be sure to check out my other stories.
"Goodbye"
The insects of the forest were connected to each other through the beautiful music that echoed throughout the Lost Woods. There was a soft, green, hazy fog that draped over the wood.
Link walked back and forth, taking it all in one last time before he would be whisked away into a world that was unfamiliar to him. Eventually, he came to the one spot in the forest where all that existed between him and that new world was a wooden bridge hung about by a series of strong ropes.
A white, flying ball of light zipped past him. Link knew that Navi was ready to go, but he wasn't sure if he was. He stared up at the spread out canopy that the forest trees formed. He forced himself to take that first step onto the bridge, and it seemed to him to be an eternity before he took another. In the blink of an eye he was already half way across.
He strained to move his feet each time. Right before he reached the other side of the bridge, he stopped. He was halted by an unknown force. He turned himself around to behold Saria on the other side. Her stare was piercing into his heart. Navi eventually flew back into the security of Link's hat, leaving Saria and Link staring at each other in silence. It felt like he had been standing there all his life.
He took one step toward Saria, but she raised her hand as a signal for him to stop.
She looked down at the floor, then looked back up, trying to fight tears. Link couldn't do anything but watch.
"I know..."
There was a crack in her voice.
"I know that you were always destined to leave this place, I felt it."
Link didn't move.
"I didn't think it would be this soon."
A tear flowed down her face.
"You were always different from the others. I guessed that's why I liked you so much."
She forced out a small, weak giggle.
"But that's also why the others picked on you, I tried my hardest to stop them from doing that. Now look at you, so strong, so..."
She lost her words. There was silence for a good moment, but finally, Saria walked toward Link.
"We can still be friends though, even though we're so different."
Her faced was soaked from her tears.
"I still want to be friends, I don't care what anyone else says."
Link took another step towards her, then stopped, Saria pulled out an object from her pocket.
"I want to give you this. It's a token of our friendship. It's just an ocarina though."
Link held out his hand. Saria laid the instrument in his hand, then closed his hand.
"My only hope is that when you hold this, you'll be reminded of me and our times together, and maybe you'll come back, even if it's just for a little while."
Link pulled the ocarina in and laid it on his heart. Saria forced out another giggle.
"Where ever in that wide world you go, just be extremely careful Link. You've got people who are worried about you, even if it's just me."
Link watched as a tear rolled down his face. He was embarrassed. Navi flew out again and hovered right above Link's head.
"You'll always be a Kokiri, just you remember that."
Link nodded. He suddenly took a step backwards. Saria put on a look of desperation.
"You can leave, but I'll be waiting. I'll wait on you forever, if that is what it will take."
Link forced another step backwards. Saria only stared. Time dragged on when finally, Link turned around and sprinted out of the forest into the fields of Hyrule. Saria was left alone in the woods. She spoke one last time before disappearing.
"Goodbye... Link."
