If Tomorrow Never Comes

If tomorrow never comes

Tonight will still have been

Your hand, still

Holding mine, between the sheets

Of your bed or

Of the pages of our story together,

You and me, you and me

If the impossible sun never rises

The way my heart screams it cannot

We will stay here, trapped

In this web of safety

Beneath the cover of night

Defying the necessity of explanation

If daylight never reaches its penetrating fingers

Over my arm, sprawled across you chest,

Will this moment, which we have created

Cease to be?

If we could stay here forever

And not go back

To a life of work, love, and death,

To a place where there are unspeakable lines

Which we can never admittedly cross

Could we just exist here, forever

Out of time?

I know that when the dawn breaks

It will be time

To pull the masks back down, hiding our faces

Our scars, our truth

From the world, from each other.

I know –

That in the daylight, this can never be

But what if all the pain and suffering

And all the injustice that we have caused

Or failed to prevent

And all the murder and the war,

The killing and the dying, and the loss of hope

What if all the sadness of our lives

Has created this darkness,

Has pulled over us this veil of never-ending night

Star-studded Night

In which we have found, in despair

This precious gift that allows us to be together

Hold me tightly, this night

In your war-worn, world-weary arms

Paladin. Protector.

And pray, because you believe

(Even if I don't).

Pray that tomorrow never comes
