New Friends, New Foes(?)
Chapter 1
Jackie had no idea what to think when he entered the room, seeing the dozens of bodies laid out on the stretchers. They all looked so young, many even younger than the Ice Gang. Yet, most of them didn't even look human; they had gray skin, oddly-shaped horns in various bright hues of orange, and some even had fangs poking out from their lips. The archaeologist supposed those were why the stretchers had secured their occupants with restraints. Still, the thought of so many children being found unconscious in the dead heat of the desert made his stomach churn. He hoped they were alright.
Captain Black gave him a sympathetic look, and briefed him further, "They were found sunburnt and dead asleep, but otherwise unharmed. Section 12 had no idea where they came from and no experience with this sort of thing, so they sent the bunch to us to keep an eye on them. Maybe we'll get some answers when they wake up."
"I hope so," Jackie said, "Have you called Uncle?"
"Uncle is already here!" the elder man's voice yelled from the doorway, and glared at a nurse who went to shoo him away, "What is going on?"
"Well, see for yourself," Captain Black said, gesturing to the rows of patients. Uncle gasped, and Jackie was quick to ask,
"What, what is it?!"
Uncle gave Jackie the two-fingered slap, "I do not know what strange children are! That is what surprised me."
"Woah! Talk about weirdos," a small voice commented, and the three adults saw Jade gazing curiously at the people inside. Jackie tried to send her off, "Jade, that is no way to talk about the injured! Why are you here, anyways?"
"Wondering what all the hullabaloo's about; it's not every day you see over a dozen ambulances drive into a secret government base."
Jackie wanted to say something, but he knew that it wouldn't help any. Uncle walked further into the room, carefully taking the hand of one of the human teenagers. A girl, who had hair much too white for someone her age, dressed in brilliant orange and red robes. Her hand was cool, but there was a steady heartbeat in her wrist. Uncle didn't recognize the thrumming magic emanating from her, and he couldn't recognize if it was dark, light, or some bizarre mixture of the two. Many mixed magic wizards never lasted long; the contrasting magics would often malfunction if performed too close to one another, and neutral spells were rare and often quite weak. Although, that was only drawing from his experience with Chi magic; for all he knew, this could be something else entirely.
The old man set the girl's hand down gently. He turned to Tohru, who was standing awkwardly at the door, "We must do research, find out where they came from. Come, Tohru!"
"Yes, sensei," the large man said, before giving Jackie some advice, "Perhaps, while we do that, you can look through the missing persons list?"
"Already on it," Captain Black jabbed a thumb towards the floor below the balcony, showing the offices full of men at work. Uncle nodded, and told Jackie, "Keep a close eye on them. Although they may not seem dangerous now, we do not know what they will do when they wake up. And one more thing,
"Keep Jade away from them!"
Jade jumped from her scooting path towards the rows, smiling innocently at her uncles. Jackie had a feeling that it was going to be a very long week.
