She bolted straight up off her bed, the rain pouring from the storm raging outside. Her heart was racing in her chest and she was sweating. In her eyes stood tears as she shivered and adjusted her sight to the dark room.
Why does this keep happening to me? She thought pulling a knee up under the thin white blanket. She ran her hands through her long, brown hair that was a few shades darker than her brown skin. That's when she noticed how badly they were shaking.
The door creaked sending her attention its way. The filmy light from the opening revealed her captain looking in on her.
"Anamaria? Luv you alright?" He whispered probably afraid of scaring her. She wiped at her eyes and forced herself to forget the painful thoughts.
"No not really Jack." She said honestly.
"Mind if I come in then?" He asked and she shrugged a shoulder in answer. Her thin, long fingers groped around for a candle to light. Once lit, Jack sat on the edge of her bed since there was nowhere else to sit. She had been having these strange nightmares about her earlier life for most of a month now. Jack was the only person who knew of them, so it was like his new nightly duty to wake her if they became too real for her. The screaming that didn't happen this night was a blessing she thought.
"How bad was it this time?" He asked his eyes full of concern and sadness for her. She licked her suddenly dry lips and looked away. She watched the rain.
"I don't really remember it. I do remember how scared I was this time, but I don't think I can recall anything. I just wish these dreams were over with." She said closing her brown eyes as previous nightmarish images played in her head.
"Don't worry, everything will be better soon, and we'll find a way to get you over this. I bet a little rum and talking should do the trick!" He said lightly like every other night. He made a habit of getting her slightly drunk and making her forget the dreams, the thoughts, as they talked into the morning. It was a nice gesture she thought because he was extremely philosophical when drunk.
Jack grabbed her hand and lightly rubbed the back of it before getting off the bed to go and get the rum. As he started sliding off the bed, she did something beyond her normal behavior; she grabbed onto him.
"Forget the rum Jack. Please...please stay." She whispered afraid to be alone even for a second more with her thoughts. She hated the neediness of the situation but she knew this was one time she could let her guard down.
Jack nodded slightly and sat back down moving closer without hesitation or words. He pulled her in to his strongly tanned arms and before she could say anything to explain away her feelings, she was crying. She cried afraid of her dreams, her nightmares, her thoughts of being alone with them.
"Its okay luv. Ana I'm here. I'm here."
He whispered to her as he laid down and pulled her lightly on top. He held her tight as she clung to him, and he kissed the top of her head easing her to sleep...
