Something I dreamed up at 4am

"You're like a momma to me"

Those were the words that Renesmee had said to Rosalie during a discussion about family, the new topic of the day for Renesmee. Nobody had known how Rosalie would react. Would she be happy and appreciate the compliment. Or would she become upset at the reminder that she would always be like a mother?

The truth is, she did both. She smiled at Renesmee and thanked her saying that it was a such sweet thing to say. As for becoming upset, she didn't start crying or stomp away angrily. She simply got up from the couch and walked away silently leaving a room full of sympathetic vampires and one confused little hybrid. Oh, and an uncomfortable shapeshifter who had no idea how to react to the situation.

Rosalie sat alone on the stone bench that Esme had bought for the garden when they moved. She couldn't cry; her vampire body would not allow it and it was just another reason to be miserable. She heard the footsteps of the person who had come to comfort her behind her. She knew exactly why they had come.

Emmett would because she was his mate, wife and lover for all eternity and could not bear to see her unhappy.
Jasper would because he could feel her emotions and try to soothe her with his gift.
Alice would because they had been sisters for so long and had developed a special bond.
Edward would because he knew exactly what she thinking and he could help her without her even having to speak.
Bella would because she would feel the need to assure her that Renesmee meant no harm and adored her.
Esme would because she understood the most how she was feeling as she herself craved a child.

But it was none of them and the lack of heartbeat told Rosalie that it was neither Renesmee (she probably wouldn't know what to say) or Jacob (neither of them could stand each other).

It was Carlisle.

"I'm so sorry"

"I know she didn't mean it in a bad way" Rosalie sighed.

"May I?" he asked gesturing to the space next to her on the stone bench.

She nodded her head gently and he took a seat next to her. He was not apologising for what Renesmee had said and they both knew it, he was apologising for what he had done almost eight decades previously on the worst night of her life. The night she was violated and beaten by her fianc e and his friends. The night he had turned her into a vampire.

Carlisle exhaled and then spoke without looking at his adoptive daughter.

"I wish I could change what is, Rosalie. I truly do"

There were a few minutes of silence before Rosalie finally opened up to Carlisle in a way she never had before.

"I sometimes...sometimes picture a daughter. My blonde hair but Emmett's curls and...beautiful amazing blue eyes. She's just...something I like think about when things are...difficult"

Carlisle smiled at her "Does she have a name?"

"A name?" Rosalie seemed confused by his question but answered anyway. "Lily"

"That's a beautiful name" he said.

She almost smiled "Do you and Esme ever-?" she trailed off.

He nodded "Yes. Yes, we do. We picture a daughter as well, Melody"

"What is she like?" Rosalie was intrigued.

"She looks a very much like Esme and loves to read, like myself. And she's...kind and loving" he replied.

"I've never talked to Emmett about...Lily" Rosalie said, sounding a little sheepish. "I'm to embarrassed, he'll just think I'm hurting or deluding myself"

Carlisle patted her hand gently before getting up "I think he'll surprise you"

"Maybe" she chuckled.

She looked down at the ground before looking straight ahead at the garden, Carlisle was already walking away.

"Thank you"

He turned and looked at her with a look of pure joy "My pleasure"
