Mairena: The Untold Story

You know the story of Mairena, but do you know the story of their untold first encounter?
It was strange though, I'm out in the middle of nowhere. I'm not sure how I got here. I remember swimming with my sister Serenity, but how did I end up losing her, let alone; where am I?
There's a little boy with his sister. They seem to be having a good time playing in the sand. Oh! How I would love to join them, but sadly, I am a mermaid and cannot last very long on land. My name is Mairena, but I go by Mai for short. I'm only 8 years old; but I know how cruel the world can be.
I overheard them speaking to one another. It sounded very sad.
"But, how could we-"
"Don't worry. Even if mum and dad get divorced, I'll still find a way ta bring ya back here someday, Shizuka."
Divorced? Are their parents going to die? I thought as a small tear flowed down my cheek. The girl, Shizuka walked away for some unknown reason. I wanted to speak to that little boy. He seems very nice, but I wonder what could have transpired into their current problems? He just saw me on some rock. He smiled at me, but I could tell he tried to hide his sadness.
"Can you come over to me?" I asked him. "Can ya just come on the beach?" he asked me. "I can't move from this spot for certain reasons." I replied. He came over to me after running from the water.
"Are you okay, honey?"
"Dat water is cold!"
"It's perfect for me."
"I don't know how ya can deal wid dis kind a water?"
"I'm used to it."
The boy cautiously made his way over to me. "So, what's yer name?" he asked me. "Mairena." I said to him. "Mairlena?" he questioned. I simply let a small giggle out. "Call me Mai for short. Everyone has trouble with my name. Has that weird 'rl' sound at the end of it. My name means Lady of the Sea."
"Lady of da Sea?"
"I know. I hate it. What's yours?"
"Joey."
"Doesn't that mean Pouched Animal?"
"I hate it just as much as you hate being called Lady of da Sea!"
Both of us had an awkward moment. I felt drawn to him. YUCK! I'm 8 years old and boys are yucky! "Don't leave me…" I uttered. "Wha was that?" he asked confounded. "Sorry. I don't what just happened." It was the only thing I could come up with.
He just touched my hand for a moment. It felt warm, yet so lady-like. "What are you doing?" I asked him. "You had a spine coming out of yer hand." I glance at it. I don't even remember how that happened.
Joey pulled it out. It bled a little but I felt a little better. For some reason, my body started acting on it's own. My arms were around him. What is wrong with me? Suddenly, I kissed him on the cheek.
"Mairena…"
"Joey…"
Our eyes met. Am I falling for a human? My heart was beating at a fast pace, like when I ate that entire colony of Des Frog eggs. I'll never forget how disgusting it was. But this type of feeling was different. I felt some sort of excitement, yet forbidden feelings. I think he was starting to feel the same way I do. But at the last second, I got scared and turned away…
"Listen, just forget you met me." I pled. "Why's dat?" Joey asked, perplexed by my request. I had to tell him the truth. So I told him in a way so quietly, only he could know my secret. "Because, I'm a mermaid." was the only thing is said as I revealed my fins and dove off.
Soon Shizuka came back with some shells she found. "Are you okay, Joey?" He stood their quietly for a moment.
"Aniki?"
"I'm fine, better dan ever."
Everything was normal for the next 8 years until that fateful day when just as everything went from good to bad…
