Shared Loss
Lily stared at the window, hugging her body and shivering despite the grey sweater she wore. "Lily?" he carefully asked.
She turned her vacuous stare onto him. "Go away," she ordered.
Remus played with the forest green sleeves of his cardigan and moved to sit beside her. "You know I can't do that, my dear."
Lily's eyes welled with tears, and she turned back to staring out of the window.
"You can't do this. James wouldn't want you to."
"Go away," she stated fiercely, as the shaking of her body increased.
"I can't. Think about Harry right now. He needs his mum, and right now, you're no good for him."
She glared at him, her eyes sizzling with emerald fire as more unwanted tears fell. "I didn't ask for your opinion. I don't need good, old, reliable Remus. I don't need you."
Remus took her hand."Then who's gonna wipe those tears?"
"Black is getting lost in a bottle of Firewhiskey. Follow his example and leave me alone."
Remus stood up. "No matter what you want, I'm not walking away from you and Harry. We're friends, and I don't walk away from a friend in need of help."
A baby squealing diverted Remus' attention and without asking for permission, he walked out of the room and went upstairs to the nursery. Little Harry sat in his crib, screaming his head off.
Remus gently picked him up. "Hello, little guy. You're one unhappy boy today, aren't you?"
Harry continued to yell, his round face an angry red color.
Remus hugged the boy close. "You miss your daddy, don't you? I miss your daddy too. He was one of my best friends and one of the first people to accept me and my furry little problem. He never judged me, never thought I was a monster. WIth him, I felt like I was normal. He was a good man, and I'll miss him for the rest of my life."
"Remus?" Lily's quiet voice interrupted his speech.
Remus cradled a now quiet Harry to his chest and stared at the grieving widow.
"I forget how important James was to you, and maybe you need to comfort me as much as I need the comfort. I haven't slept since it happened. I'm afraid to close my eyes because of what I might see."
Remus' own eyes watered. "James didn't deserve it, but I know he'd be at peace with how it happened. His family and friends were the most important things to him, so I know he'd be happy that he went out by protecting his wife and son."
Lily ran into the room and hugged Remus, her hand touching Harry's back as the boy now rested comfortably with his eyes closed and his thumb in his mouth. "Harry and I are alone now."
"No, you're really not. Sirius is lost in his grief right now, but he'll be back, and you have me. We're family."
Together, Lily and Remus cried for their shared lost as Harry slept peacefully in Remus' arms.
