"Hey Alex wake up,it's time wake up. It's time for work, you don't want your dad chewing out Jonas again right?" Alex heard from the left side of the bed. Alex humed as if considering it, only snapped out of it when his wife hit him in the arm with a bit of force.
"Ow, can't exactly do a surgery with a broken arm dear." He said grogely as he got up and stared at Amatas half naked body, from her light brown almost mocha colored skin to he dark brown almost black hair, thinking only about how lucky he was to have her and how much his arm hurt" He walked to the bathroom to put a start to his daily ablutions and called out "Did you get the twins to class?" He heard an affirmative "Yes"
After stepping out of the bathroom clean and reasonably well groomed he saw his wife well dressed and her hair in its usual ponytail. "John is asking when you'll take him shooting again" She said with a scowl. "You know projectiles are illegal unless you're part of vault security if people found out we could be punished maybe even kicked out"
He finished zipping up my vault suit and approached hugged her."It's fine Amata, it's just a BB gun, and your dads the overseer." He whispered in her ear. He left the embrace to go to the night stand on which his Pip-Boy rested. "Besides if we are perchance caught all we do is kill a few rad roaches, more community service than a crime"
"Look, just be careful okay, I know my dad is overseer but I think it's going to his head, I don't me being his daughter is going to make a big difference" Amata said in a worried tone
"Amata it will all be okay alright. Now go out there and assign a point less only to have Butch's kid end up as a vault janitor" To which she replied with another somewhat forceful punch to the shoulder.
"I'm not going to ruin Tyler's future because he's Butch's son, if anything he's the exact opposite of his dad more brains than brawn. Now get to work, your dad doesn't like it when your late" She felt herself getting spun around and kissed on the lips, and while there was no tongue warfare this time she felt the passion. "Yes dear" he replied as their lips parted. They soon left the room.
"Have fun at work" he said on his way to the elevator as she turned left, he saw a smile appear on Amata's face before she turned left to the classrooms.
"Hey Jonas I'm not late yet am I?"Alex said as he sauntered in to the office, It was reasonably well lit, considering the power failure in generator one. He got up to remove his coat from his locker."How are ya."
"Fine, and no more than usual. PS James is a mite upset about you cutting it close to operating time" Jonas replied as he cleaned his glasses again. "It's going to be the death of me if my eyes get much worse" Jonas said in an usually serious tone for Alex's usually light hearted. "Now go help your dad prepare the surgery room for Palmer while I wait for Lewis to come in and assure me he's dying, oh and give the twins a kiss on the cheek from their godfather."
"Will do" Alex said as he walked through the door past the desk into another rather bland room, much like all rooms in the vault only the bare necessities lay inside. A surgical table in the middle, and hand washing station next to the door, a cabinet containing surgical implements and a mobile monitor. He quickly spotted James preparing the surgical tray.
"Your late" his dad said in a serious tone "You knew Palmer had surgery today, if this is another day I would let it slide, but you knew how much she needs this surgery. As of today you will spend the next month on clean up and taking stock after the surgery. If Jonas didn't have impaired vision you wouldn't even do that, end of discussion."
"Yes sir" Alex said as he prepared the anesthesia and the IV tubing. He knew if he said another word on the matter he would have a few more months of what is basically janitorial duty. His mind soon began to wander as he went through the motions of doing the last minute touches on the operating room. Not 5 minutes later comes in being guided by Jonas and clutching her chest. Alex guessed the time of this surgery was cutting it close no wonder dad was so upset. What a world where the deciding factor of life and death was weather or not a 26 year old had the decency wake up on time
The surgery had been textbook, her arteries were stronger for her age and the blockages were removed without major complications. After that was nothing short of pure boredom. Alex felt near unimaginable pleasure when his day was done and he said goodbye to his dad and lifelong friend.
He approached to door to his family's quarters and went inside only to be tackled by two tiny missiles saying "DADDY". He scooped them up in his arms and kissed each of them on the cheek. "Hey you two, how was school?"
"Fine" they both said in unison. "Okay what did you learn, than you angel?" Alex said as he rubbed his nose in the crook of Nora's neck tickling her. "It was really cool." John said "Officer Gomez came and told us about Vault security and even told us about the time time mole rats came in and he helped kill them"
"That's really cool" Alex said slightly bouncing the kids in his arms. "Did you eat" he asked before putting them down. "Yup" They replied again in unison. Alex often wondered how they did that. "Mama took us out to get food rations today, she told me she would teach me how to bake a cake" Nora said in her squeaky voice.
"Good, is mom in the bedroom?" They both nodded "Good, now how much do you two want to watch 'Grognak the Barbarian fights King Bat Baby' "This much" John said stretching out his arms wide. "No this much" said Nora as she stretched her arms as far as they could go.
Okay you two, go get your mom while I set up my Pip-boy. They bolted out of the room as fast as they could.
His family lay sleeping on the couch after they watched the Grognak speciale he got from his dad a month ago, he never did say where he got it from he only said to make sure no one outside his family knew about it.
He carried the twins in his arms to their bedrooms and tucked each one in and kissed them goodnight, they mumbled in reply. He than carried his wife to their bedroom, ut her under the covers and went to bed himself, only to be started by a noise in the living room.
He got up and followed the rhythmic beep beep beep it was a familiar sound one that meant he got an urgent message from the Overseer or his dad needing help for an emergency surgery. He looked at the message and was curious and slightly startled
Son, I can't explain it right now but get your family up and ready, something bad is about to happen and you need to get to the overseers office now. Than look on his terminal for further instructions.

He knew his father was never one to play jokes, if he meant get to the office now he meant it in the same way he meant trouble. He ran into the bedroom to wake up his wife. "Amata wake up and get the kids" He didn't quite yell but said it loudly enough for her to wake up
"What's going on she asked" As she got up and saw him get his BB gun and his Baseball bat he used when he played for the vault team.
"Dad said said trouble is coming and we need to go to the overseers office" This panicked Amata as she rushed to the kids room with her husband in tow. She knew James and she knew he wouldn't tell them to do something like leave the vault on a whim. "He wants us to leave the vault, there are tunnels that go to the entrance" She said to Alex who was doing his best to keep calm "John, Nora wake up right now, we need to go!"
As she said that the lights in their quarters began to flicker for a few seconds then going off as they soon turned to red signifying a power outage. And if she wasn't mistaken she could feel the floor vibrate, a look to her husband told her she was not.
The children got up, startled by their parents, they were scared but obeying and got up, still in their vault suits. "Damn, whatever is happening it's happening now"
"Amata get some food and water together in a pack while I go outside and see what's happening" Alex said as he readied his BB gun, it wasn't much but it was better than nothing. As soon as he got out Officer Gomez almost crashed into him. Alex looked and saw Jonas right behind him.
"Alex you father said to come get you and it was time to leave" Jonas said hurriedly "I ran into Officer Gomez and asked for help, that's we were on our way when the power went out and we felt the ground shake. Yourdadsaidyouwouldknowthewayout." Jonas said frantically.
"Jonas calm down, my dad gave me directions on how to get out of the vault, I have Amata packing supplies, I just came out here to see what's happening. Lets get inside while she finishes."
"Okay" Jonas said trying to calm down "Gomez, got anything on what's happening" Alex said as he supported Jonas on his way inside the room. Gomez whispered "Overseer Almodovar said to defend the vault entrance at all costs, the Captain says lay down our arms and surrender, we can't win. Than Jonas here says you know a way to get out and i thought why not" "Best not to tell Jonas about the surrender he's a bit panicked right now if you haven't noticed"
"Okay" Alex said as he entered his quarters and placed Jonas on the couch to take a breather. "Honey our party just got bigger you ready." She replied with "Yes, you?" Almost gotta take one more thing" as he rushed to his room and grabbed his father's old bible he gave to him as a wedding present.
He gave it to his wife to put in the pack, "Alright let's go everyone, Jonas, Amata watch the kids and keep a lookout, Gomez stay with me in the front, we gotta get to the overseers office, do you think we can use the elevators?" he asked as he went outside the door cautiously as if calculating every step.
"I think we can use them, for now, some of the officers are going to obey the Almodovar, he outranks the Captain and some just have a fanatical devotion to him."
Alright Alex said as he began to break into a bit of a run."Lets go now!" he shouted to the four people behind him. The elevator was just down the hall
"Wait" Amata said, "What about the others". Alex began to slow down considering it "No, we can't if we go out the front entrance we need to be as quiet as possible, we can't have to many people with us, It's to dangerous" Alex said and began to pick up pace
"We can't leave them" Amata said stopping "It's not right we're leaving them to the mercy of whatever is going on"
"Look Amata, I know how you feel, but right now all that matters to me is you John Paul and Nora, and I can't take anyone else knowing it would put you three in danger, so please let's get moving"
Amata looked down in defeat still holding Nora's hand, she rubbed over the tiny six year old's fingers and began to move forward. Hoping she could live with the guilt of dooming all of these people, but deep down she knew her children and husband must come first
As soon as they were all in the elevator Alex slammed the 4th floor button that would take them to the top of the vault. He noticed Jonas sweating through his coat, Gomez fidgeting, and his children. Not just scared but terrified, they had no idea what was going only, bits of information that didn't help calm them down. As soon as Alex heard the ding he looked towards the door and aimed his BB rifle at the soon to be opening and heard Gomez chuckle as he did the same with his pistol "Great not only do you have contraband, it's little more than a peashooter"
"Isn't the amory up here?" I asked, "Yes it is, but if the Captain gave the surrender order I can guarantee you he lock it down" Then the doors opened and he saw Overseer Almodovar being flanked by O'Brien
"My my, what do we have here, some more little rats come to scurry away from their home and Overseer. It's bad enough one of you got out, I'm not letting anyone else disobey Vault 101s Isolationist policies, you have one chance, go back to your quarters and Gomez to your post now, or else you will be placed under arrest" The tyrannical overseer said "Your luck boy I don't arrest you right now for your contraband" O'Brien added
"Are you insane" Gomez erupted "Captain Hannon, told us to surrender" Gomez rubbed his finger over the trigger "Sorry Overseer, but we need to get to your office whatever hope you have of fighting of whatever is at the entrance is gone"
"Traitors!" Almodovar yelled"O'Brien kill them, expect my daughter if you can, I'll teach her a lesson myself" O'Brian raised his pistol to shoot Alex but Gomez was faster and shot him in the head. Almodovar tried to run as spatter from the recently deceased O'Brien flew upon him, but instantly felt a stinging pain in his leg and fell.
Amata could only stare in shock had her father just ordered her Husband and friends killed. Jonas was not much better. "No, no, this can't be happening" Amata said as she place her hands to her head. She was snapped out of it when Alex put his hand on her shoulder and told her "Shhh, it's gonna be alright I'll get us through this okay" It was his calm collected tone that helped her to calm down
"Jonas, kids the same goes for the rest of you, okay. I'm gonna get us to a safe place alright. They nodded in affirmation. He may have sounded calm but he was as scared as them, he walked towards O'Briens body and picked up his weapon and looked inside his pockets for Ammunition, counting the one in the 10mm he had three clips, 36 rounds he shouldered his BB gun.
He looked and saw a now tied up overseer spitting profanities at them and heard Gomez say"Still know how to use it" referring to the time when Gomez took him out for target practice when he was 19 as a Birthday present and the night before his wedding as a wedding present.
"I can probably hit something other than air at 10 yards" He said hoping the slight joke would help lighten the mood. It didn't in the slightest
"Amata, I am your father and I demand you help me right now!" Almodovar yelled "Please, let's hurry to daddy's office." Amata said to Alex in a voice above a whisper"
"Alright we spent too much time here let's get moving" Alex said as they began to jog towards the office he asked Gomez "The overseer mentioned someone else getting out, do you think it was my dad"
"Based on what we're doing to get out, and you fathers message, I would say he's the only candidate" Gomez replied
As they entered the office they went to his terminal and opened it up"Damn,it needs a passwo" He was cut off as Amata said "Pernell 2236, it's mother's birth year" Amata said solemnly now just focusing on her kids, if she focused on anything else right now she would break down.
"Thanks Amata, it worked" he logged in and found a message waiting for him
Well done my son, now open up the Overseer escape tunnel and remain undetected while your escaping the men coming into the vault are not friendly in anyway. Once your out at the bottom the hill you are on there will be a blue box with an insignia painted on , inside will be some supplies that will help you. I'm on my way to a town called Megaton it will be about 8 hours north of where the vault entrance is. I promise when you find me I will give you much sought after answers. Lastly there is a virus file attached to this letter open it then leave. Good Luck son"

Alex did as instructed as soon as he opened the tunnel he opened the virus file and proceeded with his escaped aided by his friends.
Inside the tunnels everyone was deathly quiet, that night was crazy enough, but the fact they were leaving the vault set in, something no one had ever done. No one ever enters. No one ever leaves were the words that were running a loop through his mind.
After about ten minutes of stairs and tunnels they approached a door. Alex was about to open it when Gomez stopped him and put a finger to his lips silently telling him to be quiet. Gomez put his hands on the handle and slowly turned trying to make as little noise as possible. When the door was unlocked he opened it a crack and the al listened. They heard two voices, but they sounded distorted like they were talking on a radio
The first voice said "We all cleaned up in there" A reply came swiftly "Yup, the last of the vaults resistance were killed," He chuckled "Needless to say watching the guy next to you turn to dust is bad for moral, anyway we're rounding them up now, we got the ground transports ready?"
"Waiting for our glorious return at the top of the hill, how long should it take." After a few seconds of silence guard number two replied "About half an hour before we march them out the door"
"What do we do?" Gomez asked as he closed the door "We could go out right now and try to sneak past the guards, or wait until they leave with everyone." Alex took a minute to ponder this and looked to Jonas and Amata. "What do you two think?"
Jonas uttered for the first time since leaving Alex and Amatas quarters, "I think we should get out now, who knows how long they'll be staying here, they might be after the vault itself, it's gotta be better than anything out there"
Amata went next saying "I think we should rest, it didn't sound like they wanted the vault only… only the people" she started to tear up and did her best to keep herself under control "besides i think the children could do with a rest."
He looked at his children and knew she was right but he could see the validity of Jonas point as well "Gomez?" Alex asked not being able to decide "We should go now, they sound like they're here for the people, but they also sound very organized, they would have to be to take down the vault. Anyway they are not some dumb marauders they would see the value in this place as a kind of fort or base. I say there is too high a risk of them not leaving."
Alex looked at his family and said "I'm sorry kids, but have to keep going right now" he knelt down and put a hand on each child's shoulders and continued "a lot of things are going to change right now. Right now I need you two to be strong for your mom and me, can you do that" John gave an eager nod which clashed with his serious expression. Nora nodded to though wich much less vigor.
He stood up and gave each of them a nice tassel on their brown heads "Good, now Gomez open the door a bit so we can look around, everyone stay quite" He looked out the door as Gomez opened it a crack. All looked normal with the in the entrance at first glance.
He looked around and saw the gear shaped door lying on the ground, it looked relatively undamaged which means it was probably cut open. Two statues he didn't recognize were the only other thing that stood out. Then one moved and spoke "Why is it taken so long to move these guys, for crying out loud they're vault dwellers who's most destructive weapons are N99s" "Supplies more specifically crops and soil, this is one of the only places you can get irradiated seeds and soil, and water, anyway shut up and keep watch if you can't do the last pnne at least shut up" "Fine"
They both stepped towards the vault main door and pointed their large gatling guns at it, facing away from the vault entrance. Alex gave started out first and lead the way to the entrance, calculating very step as he moved, being followed by Gomez, Amata, the twins then Jonas. They made their way to the gear shaped hole in the wall and went through quieter than the dead of night.
All was well until Jonas tripped on the entrance and fell. When the thudd of Jonas falling hit the groups ears what followed was the longest few seconds each of them would ever experience. In that second Alex knew he had to trust Amata to take care of the children. He grabbed Gomez and Ran for the nearest cover to hide behind.
He looked back to see Amata had the same idea and hid with their kids, Jonas whom had lost his glasses tried to run towards the mouth of the cave, only to disintegrate before his friends eyes. Amata put a hand over the childrens mouth and did all she could to stop herself from screaming. She felt a hand caress her face and she knew who it was, and she silently thanked her husband for his actions
"Damn, lost another one Commander Autumn is gonna be pissed" "Ya sure but how did he get out, wait look over there" The group froze, feeling their death was inevitable, and could only do all they could to stop a giant sigh of relief when he continued "That door over there, must be how he got out, Check it Private"
Alex peered over the corner and saw one guard disappeared and the other turned back to the vault main entrance. Okay now was their chance, he touched the shoulders of Amata and Gomez. He began to move to the mouth of the cave, He couldn't think about anything that happened, he just needed to move forward.
There's the blue box dad mentioned he grabbed the handle on the box to open it, in the dead of night it was hard to see, but inside he saw a few cans of Pork N Beans, bottled water , and another 10mm pistol with three clips which he gave to Amata. Lastly there were spherical objects which Gomez identified as grenades.
Alex gestured to some of the collapsed buildings, "Lets rest in one of those, we can't keep going" "I agree" We can't go on to Megaton right now and this is as good a place as any, at least we have something of a roof"
Amata had been eerily quiet since Jonas death, she pointed out a building that had most of its second floor. They went inside and immediately she went into a corner with her kids and cuddled up with them and began to fall asleep. Gomez looked at Alex and told him he would take first watch and would wake him up when the sun began to rise. Before Alex could protest Alex simply said "Your family needs you right now, comfort them right now"
Alex looked at hims family, and couldn't describe what he felt, it was to much to make sense of, guilt, bliss his family was safe, sorrow for his noe departed life long friend Jonas. Confusion and a slight sense of betrayal from his father and so many more emotions.
He went to his family and wrapped them all in his arms and closed his eyes, he wouldn't see the smiles on the faces of his family or of Gomez who had seen what he reckoned to be one of the only beautiful things in the wasteland. This last bit of home, he knew he would do anything for this family, right now it was all he had, and by looking at them he knew it was worth fighting for.
Alex woke up to only to be blinded by a blazing white light, he flinched and awoke his family, who based on their yelps of pain from see natural sunlight had woken up. "Yea, it'll take some getting used to, give it a minute and you'll be able to see normally" Gomez said "Sorry I didn't wake you up, but I thought I could handle the extra shift, I dozed of a bit and woke up about ten minutes ago. Sorry everyone" Gomez added as he looked guiltily with his head down
Alex who was regaining his vision walked over to his bag and said "I forgive you, just don't do that again." Alex grabbed four cans of Pork N Beans and water "it was fine this time but net time your gonna need to rest and let me watch okay"
"Thanks Alex" Nora walked up to Gomez and gave him a hug "I don't know what you did bad, but I forgive you Mister Gomez." "Me to" John said still sitting next to his mom.
"Breakfast, is served, cold protein and water, eat up we have a long walk ahead of us" Alex said distributing the food and water amongst the group. "We'll eat again in another four hours okay" "Do we have to walk for the whole time" John whined "We might take a small break after a while but I'm afraid for the most of it we must walk kido"
Just then they heard something fall just outside the small apartment corner, Amata Alex and Gomez simultaneously aimed their pistols in the direction of the noise and through the broken wall they saw a scraggly four legged animal crawl through obviously smelled the food and looked curiously at the humans, more specifically the small one barrelling towards it.
"DOGGY" Nora yelled as she ran to the dog. Just after she ran she felt a firm hand grab her arm and keep her still. "No Nora, he's wild he could be dangerous" The dog whined and held its head low as it approached. It was familiar enough with humans Alex thought.
"Can we feed him. PLEASE" John asked, while he didn't run he did have his mother's arm draped over his shoulder. Alex looked at his son and daughter and said "We can't spare anymore food for this meal, if you want to feed him you have to give him your own food"
Sensing his wife was about to object he said "Amata they need to learn things have changed, they need to learn that food isn't rationed anymore, I can't think of a better opportunity" Amata sighed, she knew he was right "Okay, I trust you. But please don't… I'm so confused" Amata said as she dropped her gun and started to sob "My dad, is with those whatever they were everyone we knew is gone and now… and now"
As soon as his wife dropped Alex told Gomez to keep an eye while they feed the dog, and told the kids to be safe when feeding the dog, him and mom are going outside for a bit. " He said as he embraced Amata cutting her off as she sobbed in his shoulder He got her up as he guided her outside.
As Alex went outside to comfort his wife away from the eyes of Gomez and her kids, a just with Alex, the one person she could let her defences fall around, the one man she could let her weaknesses show to, the only other man she could rely on was her father, oh God her father… here musing were broken by more crying, she found comfort with his arm around her back and hsi hand in her hair.
Meanwhile in the apartment everyone was momentarily stunned by Amatas sudden outburst of emotion, the usual joyful bubbly woman was seldom sad. It was disheartening to see her like this for everyone. However the children's short attention was drawn by the dog begging for food.
Nora slowly approached the dog with her can of food and slowly approached, under the watchful eye of Gomez who pulled himself from the shock of Amatas outburst. They dog lunged at the can while Nora shrieked and backed away, Gomez still had his pistol raised
The dog finished the can in record time and when he got as much nutrients from the can as he could he approached Nora and started to lick her. He laughed as she and now her brother rubbed him all over. She found a belt around the dog's neck she "D-OG M-EE-AT, no that's not a word D-OG M-EA-T Dog Meat" she said as the dog than turned to her. "Guess that's his name" Gomez said now smiling, as he remembered playing with his the vaults dog when he was a boy.
About half and hour passed and before Gomez went out to search for the couple they came back into the apartment, only to see her children cuddled up with the dog. "Nora gave her food to Dog Meat, and John shared his food with Nora." Gomez said leaning on the wall watching closely. "We going?" Gomez asked, A nod from both parents confirmed his question
"Alright kids, we gotta start walking" In her usual cheery tone, "and remember when we get to the town we get to see Grandpa James" With that being said the kids got up immediately and went straight to their parents waiting for the grand trek.
"Alright. Gomez you take the front, Amata stay in the middle with the kids. I'll stay in the back" Alex said. "With that being said" Alex looked at his Pip-boy, "We are an hour and a half behind schedule. So Gomez please head us off, that way" Alex said as he pointed north. They started to walk, with an unexpected visitor trailing close behind Nora. Well, why not, he was probably the only dog that wouldn't attack them on sight out here, what was his name, Dog Meat, very odd name for a dog. Alex thought as he walked.
After 8 brutal hours of walking with only half an hour for lunch and the occasional bathroom break, the group was nearing complete exhaustion when and were ready to collapse,Gomez and Alex had restored to carrying the children for half hour intervals. They were ready to give up for the day until the heard Gomez yell, I think I see it.
Everyone ran up to join him, and behold at the top of the hill they could see metali structures in the distance, this gave everyone a much needed second wind as the hurried towards, their objective, reaching it about 45 minutes later.
They followed a dirt road to what must have been a gate with a tall dark man with a rifle being flanked by a protectron standing in front. When the approached he asked "What's your business here in the fine city of Megaton?"
"Were looking for someone who said he would meet us here" Gomez replied neutrality "I'm gonna assume it was the guy wearing the same jumpsuit y'all are wearing?" "Yes" Gomez curtly replied
"Now listen here, I'm the sheriff around here, see free to do what you want as long as you follow the rules, than you won't have to worry about me. Now feel free to head on inside" The Sheriff replied in a more friendly manner, after he got the feeling these guys wouldn't hurt anyone.
"Excuse me Sheriff" Alex said "Can you tell me where we can find the man that looks like us?" "He spent some time at the clinic and the rest at the bar, I don know much more than that" "Thank you Sherif" Alex replied eager to finally get answers "Don't mention it Moriarty's bar is just atop the him right above the nuke, Now if you'll excuse me i gotta go patrol" Said the Sheriff as he started to walk around the cities great wall. Alex and Gomez resumed carrying the children up the hill to the bar.
They agreed it would be better to set the children down before they enter, after they that Alex put his hand on the door not know what to expect, and what he was unexpected. He saw a man with skin that looked like it had been melted off, a ghoul if his memory serves correctly. But even more surprising than that was his father talking with the bartender as if they knew each other for years.
James looked back as he saw the door open and got up, and rushed his way over to his son and embraced him as tightly as he could. He then noticed the twins running up to hug him, and Amata joined in as well. Alex and his father were both on the brink of tears till James pulled away from the hug and looked at man he was chatting with before his family came in "Can I get a few drinks for my family" "Sure the man replied, first ones free all others are gonna cost ya. GOB! The man yelled take over the bar now, I'm gonna go over my finances, and get James family a round of whatever they want on the house." He then left for a room behind the bar
"Officer Gomez, I will admit I am surprised to see you, but I am thankful you are here. I take it you all have questions, but first please allow me to ask mine, what happened to Jonas" The group shared a look, a look that confirmed James's suspicions. Alex looked him in the eye and told him the story of how Jonas tripped and alerted the guards at the door. He the described the trek it took getting there and the acquisition of the new dog
