Well you see her when you fall asleep
But never to touch and never to keep
Cause you loved her too much and you dived too deep
Well you only need the light when it's burning low
Only miss the sun when it starts to snow
Only know you love her when you let her go.
- Let Her Go by Passenger
"I'm giving you my two weeks notice."
This was new territory. He knew things had been different ever since Scottie started working here, but this was not what he expected. When it didn't work with Scottie, he thought it would get better between him and Donna. He knew that Scottie had caused a rift between them, and with her gone, he thought the rift would be too. But it wasn't. Something was still there, and now it has just gotten worse. He should have paid more attention to all the little signs. It's not like he didn't notice the changes, he just didn't want to acknowledge it. But the signs were all there. She didn't meddle with his personal life anymore. She didn't stay any longer than she needed to at the office. She was pulling away from him. He didn't acknowledge it because if he did, he knew he would have to come to terms with that fact that he might actually lose her. It hits him now. He can't ignore it anymore. He actually is losing her. It's not just a possibility anymore. It's an actual fact. No more avoidance. He knows it shouldn't affect him this much. She's just his secretary.
Except she's not just his secretary.
He knows that deep down she isn't just his secretary. She is so much more than he is willing to admit. It's always been the two of them. They work together. They face problems and obstacles, together. She has always been there for him. He didn't want to lose her. He couldn't lose her. It was hell the last time she got fired. He couldn't go through that again. He needed her.
"You can't leave. I won't allow it."
"You can't tell me what to do."
It was their biggest fight ever. The memo incident didn't even compare to this one. They were lucky that it was late at night and no one was at the office. Words were said that they wouldn't be able to take back and he's pretty sure that he made it worse. He just couldn't control his emotions. He couldn't keep the calm. He just unleashed himself. He was lost in his feelings. He was trying to convince her to stay, but it just ended with them being furious with each other. She left and slammed the glass door behind her. He didn't know what to do anymore because he's pretty sure that he couldn't change her mind. He knew he couldn't survive without her. She was like his oxygen. He couldn't breathe without her.
"Goodbye, Harvey"
He broke the day she left. Nothing was the same afterwards. He was just a shell of a man. She was moving across the country. He was never going to see her again. She wasn't here to keep him grounded anymore. She wasn't there to keep him under control. He never thought they would get to here. They were at the point where their relationship was beyond repair. But this wasn't just about need anymore, it was about love. He needed her more than anything, but he also loved her more than anyone.
