A/N: I have had this idea for awhile now. It is an AU KuroFai story, so if you don't like yaoi, don't read.
Disclaimer: I do not own Fai or Kurogane but I do own this storyline.
Summary: In a world where the people have wings upon their backs and the sinners are marked with pitch black wings, how can a black wing fall in love with a white wing? And what does this white wing have to hide?
Kurogane stood at the window looking out at his world. Night was just coming upon them, streaks of orange and pink still visible at the horizon. The white wings were hurrying back to their homes, afraid of what the night bought. Night was when the sinners roamed.
Kurogane stepped back from the window, biting back a yawn as he stretched out his stiff muscles. He then spread his massive wings to their full extent, the raven colored feathers glinting softly in the fading light. He leapt lithely out the window, flapping his wings and soaring far above the city.
He loved flying, feeling the wind gently buffeting against him, riding the air currents, it let him forget about life for little bit. It allowed him to relax and let his mind roam. He forgot about his past, forgot who he was, and for just a small amount of time, he was as free as the wind itself. The only other time he felt so at ease was when he was fighting. He was easily the most skilled man around with a sword. This, along with his renowned temper, kept people at a distance from him. He was quite content to be a loner, he didn't need anyone else. He had been alone for a long time now, ever since that time, so long ago. It still gave him nightmares. The night when he lost everything he knew and loved, the night when he had become a black wing.
He was twelve, walking home from school when a foreboding feeling came upon him. Fearing for his family he had run the rest of the way to his house, screeching to stop at the overwhelming smell of blood that assaulted his senses when he neared the front door. He hesitated, not wanting to see what was inside, to see what was causing that smell. But he went in regardless; he had to see what it was, to confirm his hunch. What he saw was something he would never forget, could never forget. There was blood, so much blood. Covering the floor, the walls, some was even splattered on the ceiling. He then saw the source of all the blood. There, sprawled at the foot of the stairs as if pushed down them, was his mother. The blood was seeping from a large stab wound in her stomach. He tried to stem the blood but it was impossible, it flowed over his hands and soaked his uniform.
"Youou…" his mother said, voice weak after losing so much blood.
"Shh," he said, "save your strength."
"I-it's up t-t-to you n-now," his mother said, voice barely audible, "y-you m-m-must p-protect our c-c-country."
She reached up and gently caressed her son's cheek, wiping away the tears that leaked from his eyes.
"Goodbye, Youou."
And the hand fell limply to the floor with a sickening thump.
He collapsed onto his mother's cooling body, his screams echoing off the walls.
Kurogane shook his head vigorously; there was no point in dwelling on those memories, it would only cause him more pain later. As it was, there was no doubt in his mind as he flew back to the castle that he had another sleepless night on his hands.
It's short but that's why its a prologue. It was actually going to be longer, but I decided it would be better to cut it off there. Fai should be coming in next chapter so don't worry. Please read and review thanks!
