Words.
I know this has been done to death but here's my take on how Castle was feeling after he heard Kate in the interrogation room.
Special thanks to LUV2sk87 for reading and telling me to post it.
Disclaimer: Everything Castle belongs to ABC and Andrew Marlow, this story however, belongs to me.
In the darkness of a starless night, the tinkling of ice cubes against crystal ring loudly across a writer's lair. A lone man stands staring out a window overlooking a busy street below, silently watching anonymous New Yorkers rushing by. Sighing loudly, he lifts the amber liquid up to salute them before putting the glass to his lips and draining it in a single gulp. Running his hand through his hair he turns and walks over to his desk. He grabs the bottle of scotch and refills the glass, slamming the bottle back down. Today was the day that his life crashed and burned. Just like the bomb that exploded in the park, his world had imploded, not with a gunshot but with words tossed at a suspect in the heat of an interrogation.
Words…how he loves them. Before today they have always been his friend, sometimes his only friend. She…she turned them into a knife. A sharp, swift stab delivered straight through his heart. A wound he doesn't know if he will ever recover from.
The man drops into his chair, knocking back another shot before banging the glass onto his desk. He drops his head into his hands and groans. He knew better. Life has taught him what love does to you. He thought this time was different. She was different. He laughs out loud; it is…this time the pain is worse than ever before.
He stands again. Walking silently back to his place at the window. He puts his arm up over his head, resting his forehead against the glass. He knows what to do. He knows what's worked in the past. He doesn't need her. Out in the road below the street lights illuminate a rainbow of colors as the pedestrians rush to put up their umbrellas. He sucks in a deep breath as the patter of the rain against the window keeps a slow rhythm with the tears sliding down his face.
