This wasn't how it was supposed to end. He should have been standing next to her as they stared down at the body of a Jane Doe, musing about what exactly had killed her. He should have been asking her about the time of death, or if anything unusual had been found on the body.
But it had all gone wrong. Calleigh told her that he had been asleep in his home when the intruder broke a window and entered the house. The sound of shattering glass had woken him up, and he had grabbed his gun and gone to investigate. He had found the man trying to steal his TV, and he aimed his weapon and identified himself, telling him to turn around slowly with his hands in the air. It had seemed like a normal break-in.
He had never seen the second intruder. The only warning he had was the widening eyes of the man he had his gun trained on. He started to turn his body to face the new threat, but he wasn't quick enough. Four bullets ripped through his body – two in the back and two in the front, as though the first two gave him the momentum to turn around completely before the second two reached him. His gun fell to the floor, landing about a foot from where his body would eventually lay. There was no attempt at any cleanup, but the electronics were taken from the house, and his wallet from the bedside table.
She felt her eyes tear up as her mind imagined his last few moments. Wondering again if she could really do this, she reached out and pushed back his hair with a shaky hand.
"I am so sorry, Horatio," Alexx whispered before she leaned down to make the first cut.
