Don't step off the path, little girl. This is the advice that has followed young Nymphadora for years. She thinks it's rather sensible. If you step off the path, you might get lost.

Don't listen to the wolf. She's not so sure about that one. The Wolf is funny, even if he can be infuriating. And he always tells the truth, just not always all at once.

The wolf is beast who can't be trusted. This one is, Nymphadora thinks, is just plain mean. The Wolf is very wise and he is there to catch her when she falls. He smiles at her with fondness tinged with amusement every time and she finds herself wondering what he looks like beneath the mask.

The Wolf is witty, charming and he promised to always be there to catch her. They say the Wolf is dangerous and that she should stay away. But Nymphadora likes his company and while she has seen the damage he can inflict, it wasn't a bad thing. The pain was dealt to a bandit who had tried to rob Nymphadora when she was walking with a basket of baked goods to Grandma's house.

The blood had been vivid against the snow and the Wolf had turned with his mask shining silver and his blade gleaming red and asked, "He did not hurt you, little wildfire?"

And she knew then the Wolf would never harm her. Bugger the warnings. The Wolf was her friend and she trusted him with her life.

The fool girl, they whisper. You don't want to end up like her.
