My first (finished) FanFiction!

I've watched this scene several times before a caught the hidden meaning behind Odin's words when he had taken the boys down to the vaults to show them the Tesseract. This is just my version of said scene from Odin's point of view.

I don't own the characters (obviously)...

"…here we remain as a beacon of hope. Shining out across the stars and though we have fallen into man's myths and legends, it was Asgard and its warriors that brought piece to the universe." Odin said, allowing the echoes of his voice to settle down before he turned to face the two boys.

"But the day will come when one of you will have to defend that piece." He whispered to both of them, but his gaze lingered on the fair-haired prince. Excitement shone in his blue eyes as Thor glanced up at his father.

"Do the Frost Giants still live?" Loki's small voice broke through to the man whom he called Father. Odin looked at him, his heart cringed. The young boy with the pale face looked so… so normal, so childlike. Loki was clever, exceptionally so for his age, although it excited the child's tutors it frightened the Allfather. Loki's intelligence meant that the boy would soon start to ask questions that Odin did not yet know how to answer.

"When I'm king," Thor exclaimed, glancing at the younger boy whose face fell immediately. "I'll hunt the monsters down and slay them all." Those blue eyes turned back to Odin. "Just as you did Father." The youth said smiling. Odin inhaled, before he could start worrying about Loki, he would first need to teach his trueborn son some lessons about life. He hated breaking the youth's enthusiasm, but as the heir to the Kingdom, Thor needed to know the true value of peace. But how to you teach someone to appreciate something that he has never been made to live without? Younever know thevalueofwhat you have till you lose it.

"A wise king never seeks out war," Odin said, leaning down towards the boys, his gaze piercing at his heir. "But he must always be ready for it." Leaving the words to echo across the vault he spun on his heels and strode out of the chamber.

He heard the patter of feet as the two children came running after the Allfather. He felt the warmth of Thor's hand as it slipped into his own. He cringed as Loki's icy fingers slipped into his other hand, willing himself not to pull away.

"I'm ready Father." Thor bellowed, bouncing in excitement as he struggled to keep up with his father's long strides.

"So am I." Loki whispered next to the Emperor. Odin stared down at both boys, taken aback for a moment by the determination in Loki's emerald eyes.

"Only one of you can ascend to the throne, but both of you were born to be kings." Odin stated, not realizing the truth in in the words that he had just uttered. For both boys had been born to be rulers. Odin strode from the vaults, two young royals at his side, one the crown prince of Asgard, the other the lost prince of Jötunheimr.
