I love you.
It wasn't the words that took my breath away... it was the conviction in his voice. I felt it all the way down my spine. It settled in my stomach and made me ache. He didn't shout it from the roof. He didn't declare it in front of our friends. He gave it to me, and I understood then. He was giving me... all he was, all he had. He laid himself bare. All I ever learned about him still couldn't tell you why it was that moment in time for him. I never asked nor wondered why that moment was so different than all the others. I don't remember the words that came before or the hours that followed, but that moment: the timber of his voice, the way his hair was shorter than I liked but just how he preferred, the calm, smooth motion of his hand as it caught mine. A perfect moment.
Many times since have I heard the same words, but that one moment stays with me. Engraved upon my heart, my soul. He once told me that I had done that to him. Imprinted myself onto him deeper than any wound ever had. Everything that came before was born the instant those words became a reality. I wouldn't exchange this for all the doohickeys in all the galaxies.
