Chapter 1 - See You Again
Carlisle
Today had been a particularly slow day in the hospital, no major injuries, which I can't say I am exactly dissapointed about. It just made things slower than necessary.
As I took a long sigh through my nose I heard a familiar voice behind me and was forced to smile. "What? You already done with this place?" Asked Edward with a lopsided smile on his face as he held his arms out and met me with a warm hug.
I had met Edward when he was only 12, he sadly had suffered from severe depression and was brought to me after a failed suicide attempt. It had been induced after the deaths of both his parents due to a severe accident. Leaving him with only his older sister, Esme, who barely had any time for him. She was struggling with getting a job while getting an education, so I naturally offered to look after him for a while.
After a short time together we had all grown quite close to one another and acted more like a family instead of friends. It was also during that time that his older sister and I had caught each others interest. Of course, being the gentleman that I am, I asked her out on a small date. Which she had gladly accepted and was more than thrilled with the situation. She claimed that we could all be one happy family.
I don't think I was able to laugh at how naive she was then, but now I was more than able to. It wasn't exactly obvious that we weren't going to work out on the first couple of dates. But after a couple months of being together we both had finally realized that we regarded each other more like siblings rather than love interests. But despite that small fact we both never once regretted the decision of going out or splitting up. And although we aren't as close now I was practically Edwards older brother.
Of course my dignity was rather beaten by the small fact that a seventeen year old was my best friend, but none the less I trusted him deeply as he did with me. "Whats up?" I asked giving a pat on his back as we stepped back from each other.
He kept a steady gaze until looking down at the ground and fidgeting with his fingers.
"Oh no don't tell me..." I said trailing off and giving a small laugh as I rubbed my hand on the back of neck, "Girl troubles my friend?
Jackpot, he had immediately shot his head up and looked at me like a dear stuck in headlights. All I could say from his reaction was that this girl really had done a number on him, "How about we talk about it while we head over to my office," I said grabbing the back of his neck and couldn't help but grin relentlessly.
"Its not some laughing matter, this girl... shes-shes different all right," He spat out at me as we were finally at my office.
I chuckled as I shut the door behind us and went to sit down at my desk as he sat down in front of me at one of the two guest seats that were there. "Of course, just like all the other girls you snagged," I couldn't pass up a perfect opportunity to tease him. But he just shot me a glare warning me to stop while I was ahead.
I put my hands up in surrender, "Alright, alright," I said finally taking him seriously, "What makes her so different?"
"Well," he began trailing off looking as though he was trying hard to pick his words carefully, "She is unreadable, I can't tell what she is thinking. Whenever she talks she doesn't show any hints of what she might be feeling or thinking like everyone else normally does."
I shook my head remaining quiet for a couple of minutes trying to decide how to reply. Edward had somehow in the past couple of years convinced himself that he could read people. Which I couldn't exactly deny, he had an unnatural talent on noticing what other people thought about certain things by their reactions. But he was just observant, nothing more like he would claim.
"Hmm," I said briefly glancing up at him as he stared intently at me, his hands linked together in between his legs as he leaned forward. It looked as though whatever came out of my mouth was as precious as gold to him, "Not everyone likes to show what they are thinking, much like yourself." I said trying to point out that he too does not reveal much about himself.
But clearly he had no interest in what I had to say as he just shrugged and went back to staring at the ground.
I leaned back in my chair and brought a steady hand through my hair and finally decided to break the silence after several long minutes.
"Whats this girls name?" I asked trying to get some insight on who exactly the girl was and if maybe by some chance I knew her.
"Bella, well Isabella Swan," He mumbled still looking at the ground in front of him, which was irritating me quite a bit. But I just took a deep breath and tried to remain patient with him.
As I leaned back forward, gently placing my elbows on my desk, I had breifly remembered hearing that name once before. It was from my old friend Charlie, I had met him in my teenage years. I wasn't exactly a trouble maker, I had just enjoyed viewing other teenagers over complex a rather simple situation. As they would get busted for underage drinking at parties or vandalizing city property I had gotten picked up for questioning each time because unlike the others, I wouldn't run. After a while of spending time with me Charlie also began to realize that I wasn't doing anything wrong and told me just to come clean with him when things like that had happened. Which naturally I agreed to.
Ever since then we stayed in frequent contact and a couple weeks ago when he came to the hospital to drop off a man that they had arrested who dislocated his shoulder in the process, I remembered him mentioning that his daughter would be coming to live with him. Which I would assume would be the girl that was causing Edward this much confusion seeing how Charlie and her had the same last names and I would doubt that some other girl with would just be coincidently moving to town.
"Thats Charlies daughter," I said finally breaking the eternity of silence that was going on in my office.
Which appearently caught his attention as his face shot up and met my eyes, "You mean Chief of the Police Charlie!"
How much shock that was going trough his face sparked my curiosity as I decided to interrogate him, "Yes, why does that surprise you so much?"
"Oh, n-no reason." He replied avoiding my eyes which lead me to believe that he was not telling me the complete truth. At this stage in life Edward was in quite a delicate position, he was on the brink of becoming an adult and he lacked any parental guidence in the process of his teenage years. And while I tried to guide him as best I could he sadly would not look at me as more of a father figure than that of an older brother.
"Edward," I tried my best to act stearn but failed in the process as he shot a look up at me and quickly replied again that it was nothing. Which I decided to leave it at, I knew that if it was anything truly bad Charlie would have told me. So I suppose having a little faith in the boy wouldn't hurt.
"Fine, fine." I mumbled and left some room for a reply back which never came.
After an hour of talking none stop about this Isabella Swan I had decided that I would like to meet the girl for myself as I suggested, "How about I invite Charlie for dinner? That way I can get to know why exactly she is causing you this much confusion." Which to my surprise he was more than ready to accept.
