Summary: A take on how Murtagh feels after he kills Oromis
Uru'baen
Its not as if I wanted to do it. I had no choice. Galbaotrix knew my name. He was too powerful. He had complete control over me and over Thorn, my only friend.
I was grateful to have my dragon he is the only one who understands me. It pains me greatly to have him forced to become older than he truly is. If it wasn't for him I think I would have committed suicide long ago. Now I could not do that, I could not do that when I know that doing that would out him through so much pain. I can only imagine the pain that the old man's dragon had to go through.
If only Eragon could see that I am not truly evil yet. I think he once wanted to save me but now… he likely wants me dead and I don't blame him. Still, he was my only hope and I never forgot what he told me, about the possibility being free, my own person not some king's, but now he would never want to see me let alone help me. What if I don't deserve to be helped. What if I am evil. After all, I killed someone who didn't deserve it. But didn't he see that I don't want this. If I did want this, if I was evil I would have captured him and taken him to Galbatorix. I just couldn't do that to my own brother, my own blood. I could not let him be put through what I must endure.
I had lost all trust with the Varden but maybe, just maybe there was some way to get Eragon information to help the Varden overthrow the evil king… and save myself and Thorn…I know it would be hard but I must try. Doing this might just put me back into favor with the right people.
The Spine-earlier that day
While Murtagh was engaged at the battle in Gilead, a young girl sat atop a thick old tree singing softly to herself. She laughed as animals begin to gather below her. A familiar wolf began to howl, singing along in his own way.
As time passed more and more animals began to gather, her voice enthralling all around her. She jumped from the tree to land on the soft ground of the forests. They animals followed her as she ran throughout the forest.
Suddenly a man in armor stepped out from behind a tree. She had little time to even let out a gasp before he hit her hard, knocking her uncousious. She fell back and her beautiful singing stopped. The man was not alone. Many more stepped out from the surrounding forest to help their companion. Animals scattered afraid of the attackers.
The men bound her arms and legs. One who seemed to be their leader slung her over his shoulder as if she weighed little to nothing.
She stirred and one of the men put a spell on her "Just so she won't wake," The man grunted when the others looked at him. He was a tall, thin man. Clearly he was not brought along to help the capture by force but by his skill with magic.
In a nearby clearing horses awaited to take the captured to the city of Uru'bean where the girl would meet her fate.
