What is right
Dark clouds covered the sky. No star could be seen even though they both knew that there were stars all around them. They seemed to stand on top of the world, looking down on a city they did not even know very much. And it was better, not to know the city you went to to investigate. Wasn't it hard enough to see all that sorrow without it?
It was hard, harder than any of them might tell, no matter how hard they tried.
Derek Morgan stood on the roof of a skyscraper, looking down into the lights of fast moving cars and street lamps. He felt cold and a little sick. Although he was normally not afraid of great highs. Maybe it was the whole situation that scared him. Or the unspoken words among them.
Carefully he twinkled to Emily. Her dark hair moved softly in a light flaw but her eyes were steady and cold. A white bandage on her arm seemed to catch all the lights around her. It was the only color she wore. Blouse and jeans were as black as her hair.
Derek wanted to talk to her, wanted to tell her that everything would be okay. He couldn't. Everything he might have said would be too much. Lies, just lies besides that what he couldn't tell. What he was not allowed to tell or even feel. If he was not able to talk to her he might take her hand, hug her as he had done it a hundred times before. But that meant he had to move and he was frightened of only the slightest move.
Emily continued to watch the clouds without talking. She had been shot yesterday, when they had caught the man who had murdered five black haired women looking exactly like her.
When she suddenly turned around, Derek's heart beat faster. He had not been there to protect her, what made him feel gulty.
"It's not your fault, Morgan", she murmured.
"Yes, Emily, it was. If I had been there…" They had had two hints. He'd chosen to follow the wrong one.
"You are here now." She laid one hand on his arm, looked him in the eyes. Derek felt his heart bursting. Long, long ago he had known this feelings, had known what to do about them. Now he was unsure what to do. Emily should be more than just a girl for one night.
"That's not enough for me."
"But for me." Her smile was soft and sad. "I'm glad you're here. Nothing else matters."
Was she telling him, was he understood? He didn't know, couldn't think at that moment.
"I'm sorry you've been hurt, Emily."
"I know. And I… but we can't. It's not allowed and… I…"
He laid one finger on her lips, finally moving. She shivered but not because of the cold. It was as if the clouds moved away as if the sun came out again, though it was past eleven at night. But he did not want to create a rainbow, too. Derek knew what Emily had wanted to say and he felt the same. But was that right? Was it right to put their job on the first place instead of their feelings?
He embraced her finally not trusting to do more. Again a chill crossed Emily's body and he hugged her even tighter.
Then they looked down on the city again. Not saying any more words.
