I meet Cody first in prison, he was a vulnerable person suffering horrific trauma and was special needs. Cody was also mute; it everyone it seemed Cody was an easy victim and never seemed to get a break. There was always someone who wanted to hurt him. Cody's abuse started when he was a child.

His mother, Maria was raped when walking home late at night; she already had five sons and two daughters so her and her husband Robert didn't want any more children. By the time Cody was born their youngest was fourteen. Cody had no chance at love; they had decided before he was even born that they hated him and that he was just like his father. From the first day of his birth Cody was physically, sexually and emotional abused as well as neglected. He never went to school, or saw a doctor or a dentist and was left half staved and unbathed for months. Cody hadn't done a thing to anyone, he couldn't even speak up about his maltreated because he was mute and he rarely ever saw anyone anyway. Cody was defenceless to this people, they were free to torture and abuse him as they pleased and no one could stop them.

It was years before anyone knew what Cody had really been though, we guessed he had suffered a trauma but we never really knew the truth. It was only after Cody learnt to write did we know what he went though. Once Cody had learnt to write he used to write down his past in a small notebook-it was just flashbacks and memories or a simple word or two-at the end of each day he would place the notebook on my desk before bed. It was though Cody's notebook did I learn the truth. For the first time Cody's story was heard and they weren't getting away with what they did to him any longer. Cody wants his story to be told, but sadly he lacks the skills to tell it for himself. So I am telling it for him.

Abused children are vulnerable, defenceless and scared children generally, but take an abused child with special needs and you can easily get away with doing what you please to them as they can't speak out for themselves. Abused children can't even speak out for themselves most of time, so how can an abused child with special needs?

Cody grew up in a world where he never knew love, his childhood had no affectation and then he was framed for murder and sent to prison at fifteen, all while his abusers got away with the abuse he suffered. Cody will never be fully over that abuse; years later and he is still waking up in the night with nightmares or suffering flashbacks. The scars they have left on him both mentally and psychically will never heal. This is him not allowing his attackers to stay hidden any longer, and forcing them to admit to themselves and society that what they did to him was wrong.

Austin.
