Am I Beautiful?
"Will?"
The shy, humble carpenter looked up from his sawing. Raking a hand through his hair in an attempt to shake out the dust and get it neater, he smiled shyly at the small, petite woman in front of him.
"Yes, my love?"
Djaq took a small, shy step forward. Will noticed she was looking troubled immediately.
"Is anything wrong?" Will asked, storing away his axe, his glittering eyes still on the perturbed, beauteous woman waiting.
"Do you…do you think I am beautiful?"
Will turned from concerned to baffled. Beautiful? Of course he thought she was beautiful. She was stunning in his eyes, anyway. And why would Djaq of all people be disturbed of something like that?
Will's thoughts were interrupted as he heard Djaq say sadly. "I…I'm sorry. I didn't mean to disturb you. I'll go."
"Wait!" Will called. His heart fluttered as Djaq turned around, her face still a bit put off. Getting up, he strode over to her and gently took her hands in his.
"Where's this coming from?"
Djaq sighed sadly. "A village girl is getting married. I-I was talking to her fiancé and he was babbling on about her beauty and such. And…and I thought if…if you-
Will pulled her closer, silencing Djaq. His arms wove around her small waist and he looked into her deep, brown eyes.
"Of course you're beautiful." Will told her softly, tucking away strands of her silky hair that were splayed over her smooth forehead. "I love you for it."
"Will." Djaq sighed. "I have short hair. I'm…I'm not what you would call pretty."
"So you're talking about looks?"
Djaq was puzzled. "Of course I am. What other type of beautiful is there?"
Will laughed softly and looked into her eyes.
"You're gorgeous, my love, but I was not talking about looks. I was talking about you. Djaq. You're intelligent, you're caring. You'd give up your life to save others, and I love you for it. You don't spend your time worrying about how your hair looks, or how much lipstick you need. You're unique. You want to learn, to seek knowledge. You can fight- even better than any man. That's what beautiful is. You're beautiful, my love."
Djaq smiled at him for the first time that day. Will leaned down and gave her a tender kiss. When they broke apart, he smiled at her again.
"Do you understand?"
'Yes." Djaq spoke softly, kissing him gently. "I dare say I do, Will Scarlett."
