After Link drew the Master Sword, he was put to sleep for a span of seven years. He awoke to find that the evil Ganondorf had taken over Hyrule, and was soon soon on his way to the Sacred Forest Meadow where Saria, his dear friend, was in certain peril..
As Link traveled through the meadow, Navi floated out of his tunic, shouting, "Hey! Listen Link: Press Z to get a sneak peak around these corridors!"
"We covered this in the Dodongo's Cavern. I know I'm what I'm doing, Navi. You don't have to tell explain every little thing to me." the Hero responded.
Navi turned red in disbelief. "Please, Link. You'd be totally lost without me. Without me, you wouldn't even know how to open up doors!"
"What!? You turn the knob, Navi! I'm not stupid."
"Oh really? I saw how you were staring cluelessly at that door inside of the Great Deku Tree. I like you, Link, but you're not the brightest boy."
As Link and Navi were having this discussion, a large spear-toting Moblin caught the duo unaware, and he thrust Link into a pool of water with his spear. As Link recoiled in agony, he shouted at the top of his lungs, "I wish I had another sidekick!"
Then, an ethereal spirit floated out of Link's sword. "Recognition completed: Master Link. I am Fi, the spirit of the Master Sword."
"Hi, I'm Navi! I'm Link's guide on this quest. Could you help me give him a few pointers?"
"At once. Master Link, I detect a 55% probability that you should climb out of this pool of water. Be sure to wait until your nemesis is facing the opposite direction."
"And once you get close to him Link, use your hookshot on him!"
"I project a 95% chance that Navi's advice will administer a fatal blow the Moblin. Proceed when ready, Master."
"Right, kill the bad guy. I've got it."
"Wow, Fi! I'm impressed by your technique. I always try to dumb things down so that Link's tiny brain can understand them, but sometimes it's hard for me to pull off the appropriate level of condescension."
Link rushed the Moblin and killed him with his sword. "I'm not stupid, you two. I know how to open doors, I know how to Z-target, and I know how to look around corners!"
"Master Link, the batteries in your Nintendo 64 controller are nonexistent. Please perform hardware modifications to your N64 controller to enable battery-powered wireless functionality. If you choose not to do this, my notification system will be without purpose."
Link seemed confused. "I don't know what you're talking about, Fi."
Navi interjected, "That's because you never pay attention to what the Action Icon says!"
Fi, concurring with Navi, said, "Affirmative. If at any time you feel overwhelmed by the complexities of Hyrulean living, Master Link, equip the Ocarina to a C-button and play Saria's Song. You will be able to talk to either Navi or myself."
"But we're talking right now. When do I get to rush this next Moblin?"
"Patience, Master Link, there are still many more things of which you must be informed."
"Yeah, Link! Listen to this: Do you see that ladder over there? Sometimes ladders lead to secret grottoes."
"Judging from the area's topography, it seems likely that said ladder leads up to a grotto that contains fairies, Master Link."
"Great point, Fi! And after you stock upon fairies in the grotto, get ready to fight the big Moblin that's blocking the way to the Forest Temple!"
Suddenly, Link pulled his sword out and fell on it. His death ultimately caused the events of the so-called "Downfall Timeline."
