Allison and Nathan both needed the arrival of one blonde, sexy sheriff to finally realize why their marriage was bound to fail. Allison had just been too smart to present a healthy counterpoint in any relationship with Nathan.
She actually understood how important Nathan's work really was, so she was definitely the wrong person to keep him from constantly working late or keeping his gigantic ego in check.
Jack wasn't smart in science, but very smart in things like life. Most of all he was smart enough to realize, that Nathan Stark needed someone who would prevent the man from loosing himself to science, someone to keep him sane and anchored to reality of the world outside his job.
Just once in a while Nathan needed to be not smart and Jack Carter was just the right kind of partner to be not smart with.
