The year Rin started at the Academy the ratio of boys to girls was three to one. By her second year it was down to five to one. There were three girls in her graduating class. There were twenty-six boys. Of the three girls, Rin was the only one to survive the war.
Rin was used to being an anomaly. She was the sole ninja in a family of civilians. She was the only one to choose the path of a medic in her class. She told her family that she would be safer as a medic. She was glad they didn't see through her lie.
The time Rin spent studying medicine severely detracted from the time she spent training. This allowed her to perform a successful eye transplant between Obito and Kakashi. This also allowed her to miss the presence of the Rock-nin that captured her. She didn't think this was a fair trade. Neither did Obito.
Obito thought that Rin didn't love him. She did. She loved all three of her teammates dearly, but she also knew that twelve year-olds know nothing about love. When she took Kakashi's hand and left Obito to die alone she discovered that she was wrong. Obito had known the meaning of love all along.
After Obito's funeral Rin didn't cry for him anymore. It didn't mean she had gotten over his death. It didn't mean that she didn't miss him anymore. She missed him every hour of every day. She knew every breath she took was because he had refused to leave her behind. She didn't want to waste those breaths crying over what he had willingly given.
Rin visited the memorial stone every day. She always brought something. Mostly she brought flowers, but sometimes in the winter when flowers were difficult to find she would bring him a rice ball, or a bowl of ramen. Once she found Kakashi there, pounding the stone until his fists were bloody. She ended up bandaging his hands without comment.
Rin was always the one to patch Kakashi back together after his missions. He usually needed a lot of patching up. Somehow she always got the job done – she had forcibly hauled him back from the brink more than once. Even with all her medical expertise she could not save Yondaime. She never really forgave herself for this.
After Yondaime's death Rin brought twice as many flowers to the memorial stone. Kakashi started joining her if he was in the village. That wasn't often. He was an ANBU captain and the village needed him. Rin's greatest fear was bringing three times the flowers to the memorial stone.
Rin's greatest fear never came true.
Kakashi's did.
