Prologue: The Most Important Task

Dear Diary,

Tonight I will begin my Harrowing, my final test and obstacle to become one of the Circle of Magi. I was approached this afternoon by First Enchanter Irving, and he told me to prepare myself for the final test. The rest of the apprentices swarmed around me, talking quickly, excited for me. I just wanted to be left alone, to prepare for this great and most important task. The interest in me died down soon enough once my friends started realizing that this may be the last time they see me. Funny how death in the Fade is the second thing that comes to their minds, and not the first. I know it has been on my mind ever since I knew what the Fade was. It wasn't until later that Jowan approached me.

"So, tonight's the night huh?" He asked, and it startled me, as I was lost in thought.

"Yeah, I guess so. Better say your goodbyes now." I said, only partly joking.

"Don't be scared Tessa, I know you'll be great." He replied.

Jowan has always had a bit of a crush on me I think. But lately he has been visiting a lady friend, someone who he only speaks of in generalities. He is my oldest friend, and I hope that this romance doesn't bring him to too much trouble. He smiled as he reassured me, but I could also see fear in his eyes.

"I am not afraid," I said, now reassuring him, "Just hoping to survive and become part of the Circle."

That is all I have ever wanted, to become part of something. I have never been anything great as an apprentice. I always do what I am told, learning what is required of me and never causing trouble. I only hope that this serves me well in the Fade.

"I'll leave you to your thoughts. Good luck my friend, I will see you soon." Jowan said as he walked away.

I hope he is right, that I will see him soon. I'm not sure if I want to know what happens if I fail. If I never again see this place, or open this diary, at least I have written about my life as an apprentice. I see Irving in the doorway, it must be time.
