Wilson took a bite of his sandwich and immediately had to resist the urge to spit it across the room. It contained roast beef and he hated roast beef. Unenthusiastically he swallowed the morsel, folded the plastic wrap back over the slightly-eaten baguette and tossed it onto House's desk. House half-opened his eyes. If it was possible to do so, he reclined even further back into the chair with his feet up on his desk. He looked a picture of perfect repose but he fooled no one. House was rarely at rest. Taciturn often, pre-occupied always but rarely at rest.
"Damn it, House, you know I can't stand roast beef."
"There's nothing as good for you as overcoming old prejudices. Anyway THAT one was not meant for you. It was intended for Cuddy." muttered. House.
"You invited her to this grand banquet too?" Wilson asked sarcastically.
A slight smirk was House's only show of emotion.
"Nope… right now I should be standing before the board explaining my departmental budget overrun this month. Needless to say, I'm not there. So, at any second, the delectable Dr. Cuddy will be storming through those doors pistols at the ready."
He seemed to be mentally relishing the thought.
As if on queue, simultaneously the door to his office opened and a female voice hollered:
"Damn it, House!"
House turned to Wilson smugly. "That's the fourth time I've been called that today. Maybe I should put it on my business card: Damn-it-House".
He seemed to be savoring the words.
Cuddy grew even angrier.
"I ask you to do one thing… ONE THING… House, to show up at the board meeting and justify your budget overrun. And… and you can't even give me that!"
House smirked "If I had known that you were looking as adorable as you do today, I would have…"
Cuddy interrupted "Cut the smarminess House! This the last… LAST time, I'm going to put my butt on the line for you"
"And what a fine…", was all that House could interject before Cuddy gave a groan of frustration and slammed out of the room.
Wilson turned to his friend of many years.
"Why do you antagonize her so? It's like you're in second grade and pulling her ponytails."
House murmured. "We understand each other, Dr. Cuddy and I. In Mongolia, they speak Mongolian; Cuddy and I speak cud-house." He smiled at his own witticism.
Wilson mumbled, "It seems an immature way to get a girl's attention".
House said with a raised eyebrow: "That's what YOU don't understand, Wilson, I already have her attention."
House leaned even further back in his chair, closed his eyes and knitted his fingers together over his torso.
As Wilson walked out, he was sure that House's lips wore a slight smile.
