TIME TO GET AWAY
Chapter One.
Bessie had just gotten a call from her little sister Joey yesterday. It had been so good to hear her voice after fourteen long months. Joey and her best friend Pacey had vanished those months ago, both leaving a note saying that they were together and would be safe, and that provided no one attempted to find them, they would return home.
Joey had told her that she and Pacey would be home on this day to see Bessie and her family Bodie and Alexander. Pacey's own family were a lost cause, nobody wanted to see them.
Thinking about it now, Bessie was not sure why she had called everyone to come over to greet Pacey and Joey. Maybe because she wasn't sure she could handle it alone. Maybe it was because she thought it would be easiest for Pacey and Joey to only say what they needed to say about why they left once. Maybe, it was merely a lack of not knowing what else to do.
She had called Dawson Leery and his parents Gale and Mitch. Dawson, Joey's former boyfriend, was 1/3 of the patented Capeside Three Musketeers, the other two, of course, Pacey and Joey. As well as Jen Lindley (as well as her Grams) who is (or should she say was) a good friend of Joey and Pacey. Too, she called Andie McPhee Pacey's ex-girlfriend and her twin brother Jack (also Jen's best friend and Joey's ex). They were all here in the B&B Joey and Bessie had dreamed up and Pacey had brought to life sitting in the living room waiting for the two to walk in the door.
There was a still silence. Only Dawson seemed to be showing any signs of emotion, and that emotion is anger. Dawson had been horrified maybe more than anyone about the two leaving. Everyone was worried about their educations. They had missed graduation with their friends, senior prom and for what? They could only hazard guesses.
It is and always has been well known that Dawson was the dreamer, Joey was the fighter and Pacey was the protector. Especially when it came to the only female in the group. It was common knowledge to all that he would never do anything that he thought could maybe do something to hurt her or ruin her future, no matter how much they argued. It was also well known that Pacey would fight to the death if anyone ever tried to hurt either Dawson or Joey in any way.
So when they finally heard the front door click open, they were all on the edge of their seats waiting. In less then a minute Joey and Pacey, looking more relaxed and at ease then anyone had ever seen them, appeared before them in the entrance to the living room. Neither made any move to actually step forward into the room.
"Joey, Pacey," Bessie started before stopping when Joey lifted her hand in a stop signal.
"Bess, we need to talk first." Joey said.
"What the hell, guys," Dawson said angrily. His mother placed her hand on his knee in an attempt to calm him.
"Listen, D, we certainly did not really plan on getting up and leaving town, but we really had no other choice,"
"Wait, Pace," Joey put a soothing hand on his arm, everyone narrowed their eyes a bit at the more-then-friendly gesture as Joey looked deep into his eyes. "This is for me to explain. It's not your responsibility. It's mine." Joey turned back to the anxious group.
"Guys, this is what happened…"
FOURTEEN MONTHS AGO
BANG BANG BANG BANG.
Pacey furrowed his brow from his spot on the couch in Doug's apartment where he lived. He looked at the clock. Eleven PM. Who could possibly be at his door at this hour? Doug was at work so it couldn't be for him.
He got up and as soon as he cracked open the door a teary eyed Joey Potter pushed through into the apartment.
He immediately closed the door before wrapping her in his arms, holding her as she cried. "Joey, what's going on?"
"I'm late, Pacey," Joey said, looking directly into his eyes.
She had told him about her mistake with AJ and so he knew the implication of this. In a last ditch attempt to save her relationship with the college boy she had slept with him. It didn't work out and Joey had called Pacey in the middle of the night. He had driven to get her in Boston and had comforted her as she cried about stupidly losing her virginity to someone who didn't even really care.
"If I'm pregnant then the whole town will just have even more evidence that I am nothing but trailer trash from the wrong side of the creek." She sobbed.
"Have you taken a test yet?" Pacey asked softly.
"No, I have one in my purse. I was scared." Joey admitted.
"Well, go and take it and I'll be right here. We'll figure this out together once we know whether or not something actually needs to be figured out."
"We used a condom, Pace…" Joey cried.
Pacey pulled back, holding her at an arms length, forcing her to really look at him. "Avoiding taking the test is only going to prolong this in a not-so-nice way, Jo, you need to take it now."
Joey looked into his eyes. Truly the guide to his soul, Pacey always had the eyes that could tell you everything about him and his emotions and any given time. She nodded, straightening up. She wanted nothing more than for this nightmare to be over.
After a minute she came out of the bathroom. They set a timer for three minutes and waited together on the couch with the test in front of them on the coffee table. Sensing her fear, and feeling his own for his best friend, Pacey reached out and took her hand in his. The timer went off.
Pacey picked it up.
"What does it say, Pacey?" she asked, tear filled eyes.
"What do you think of Evan if it's a boy?" Pacey asked.
Joey let out a deep breath. She was pregnant. Pacey wrapped an arm around her pulling her closely.
"How am I going to do this, Pace? And the town? Just more adding fuel to the trailer trash flame." She sniffed.
Pacey thought about this for a minute.
"So we'll leave." He said confidently. Joey pulled away from him and gaped at him.
"What?" she asked.
"We will leave now, get on the True Love and sail away. Find somewhere to settle down. I have been saving all my life I have plenty of money for us, we could live on the boat in the pier of wherever we dock for a while if we want to. We'll come back later, sometime way after the baby is born and we will explain everything. By that time, everyone will have forgotten."
"But Pacey, the baby.."
"We'll do a fine job raising the baby, Joey," Pacey nodded, "Don't you worry. We'll find a high school where we settle down. It'll all be fine."
"You want to help me raise the baby?" Joey asked. Now the tears were merely for her best friend, willing to give up all his dreams to help her.
Pacey looked at her. "It can be our baby, Joey, I'm not going to leave you to do this on your own."
PRESENT
Everyone was gaping. No one knew what to say and then Pacey reached behind the wall and crouched down next to a baby carrier that they hadn't even noticed. He pulled an adorable six month old brown haired brown eyed baby out and held him gently and proudly in his arms.
"Everyone, meet Evan Pacey Witter."
