HAPPENSTANCE
Grandfather tol'd the first hour of morn,
A young maiden stirred, quite forlorn.
Sine qua non, such is her modest dress,
As she roamed the halls in hushed distress.
Cerulean vigilance governed the event,
Unbeknownst of the woman-child's predicament.
A supernal being, the knave swore himself this,
And ruminations of the Hereafter he couldn't dismiss.
Rites of yester came to the fore,
More fair was she than the Helen of lore.
Saintly strands haloed her russet head,
In charming disarray from being abed.
His heart then seized and logic fled,
So rapt was he that it caused mis-tread.
The groan of wood mocked his novice slip,
While guarded eyes took notice of the trip.
Instead of fear came a curious stare,
An appareled manus extended with utmost care.
"Who are you?" was the simple request,
Stayed quiet he, believing it best.
With a disarming smile, the cur regained his stance,
Posed a gentlemanly bow whilst he had the chance.
"L'Etoile du Tricherie (01) does not compare," he at last professed,
Then reached for her cheek to be gently caressed.
Abrupt recoil made him stay his hand,
Of bated breath, he waited for reprimand.
Instead, she brokenly whispered, "You can't."
He accepted her declaration without argument.
Suddenly, a beast of a man hastened their way,
Making the varlet realize he could no longer delay.
Wild and unkempt, the newcomer was a sight,
Anyone lesser would have cowered - affright.
Regret flickered its way across the interloper's face,
With practiced ease, he stole from her neck a scarf of lace.
Before she could object, he bid his sweet lady adieu,
Voice silky with promise, "Call me LeBeau (02)."
The din of laughter trailed in his wake,
A snikt and low growl deterring not the rake.
For, in her arms, past deeds would be forgotten,
Certain was he, even for one so misbegotten.
