The Stupid of Gondor

'Can you say Steward, Den? Steward?' Ecthelion asked his little son as the child lay in bed.

Denethor gazed gravely up at him, struggling to get his mouth around the word. 'St…Stew … Stupid,' he said finally, looking proud to have accomplished this task.

Ecthelion grinned. 'No son, it's Steward.'

'Stupid,' Denethor repeated slowly.

'Steward.'

'Stupid.'

'Steward.'

'Stupid!'

'Stew - ard.'

'Stupid!' Denethor balled his tiny fists in annoyance.

'Listen, boy! It's Steward!'

'Stupid!' Denethor insisted. 'Stupid Ecfelly!'

Ecthelion smiled, drawing the covers up around the toddler and kissing him on his brow. 'Very well, then,' he said. 'Stupid it is.'

This is just something that came to me while pondering Denethor and his father. It's very cute and fluffy, but there you go. And Ecthelion shouldn't be Steward yet, but I remembered that after I'd already written it - also I thought it might get a bit confusing if I put Turgon in instead. Still, I think it captured Denny's pride and stubbornness, at any rate. ;) Hope you like!
