Chapter 1

Out of the Darkness

Place: Unknown

It was dark. It was always dark for as long as I could remember. Nothingness was my only friend, stillness my family. Where I was, what day it was, or what time it was, I'd never know.

Wake up...

Who's there?

Silence was the only answer I received. I turned around in the opaque, rayless world. I peered deep into the same darkness. I stood there for a while, wondering and fearing where the voice came from. But the same unbroken silence resumed without a clue left behind. I didn't know what to do, so I walked in this empty world, slowly and silently. I was still waiting for an answer, but never got one.

Was I going to cry again? Was I going to smile, something I couldn't do in the first place? What were those emotions that I had? I couldn't understand...

There wasn't anything I could recall. Despite my persistent efforts, it was futile. I was trapped like a bird in a cage, never to be freed. With no visitors and nothing to do, I turned and walked away. Just one friend was all I needed in this world, yet I was my own best friend. How ironic it was that I knew I'd die alone in the end, if I knew what death even was.

For now, all I could do was close my eyes and keep walking away, ripples left behind where I once stepped and then everything just…

Come on, wake up please...

I hear that voice again… It's calling me, but from where?

I'm right here...

Place: Mew's Room, Tree of Beginning, Kanto Region

I felt something hovering over me when I saw two white lights split the darkness in half, opening to a bright and colorful but blurry world. How much time passed since I was in that dark, empty world? My vision came into focus as I blinked multiple times. A pink, bipedal cat-like creature with a long, skinny tail ending with a rounded tip hovered over me. I looked around me in a daze...

Where was I?

"Hey look! She's awake," the pink creature exclaimed.

"I can see that. But right now, what matters is how she got here," a male voice replied.

I sat up slowly, holding my head in my hands. Then I looked at my pale hands as I could see them more clearly. I was in the everlasting darkness before, but realizing I was now in real light made my eyes widen. I looked up to see the pink cat Pokémon hovering over me. I stared into its baby blue eyes and saw my bright blue eyes reflected in them.

"Who are you?" I asked meekly, my voice raspy from never using it. Why would I need it in the darkness when I never had someone to talk to but myself? The pink cat giggled as it flew around in circles than towards a bipedal, jackal-like Pokémon, with fur that is predominantly blue and black. It possessed a short, round spike on the back of each forepaw, in addition to a third on its chest. It possessed cream-colored fur on its torso, and blue fur on its thighs that resembled shorts.

"I'm Mew, and this boy here is Lucario." Mew giggled as she introduced themselves. She flew in a circle up head of that Lu-Lucar... Lucario! There it was! The name!

"Mew, don't just give our names to some human," Lucario snapped at the floating Pokémon.

"Ah, why not? She can understand us so I thought it'd be nice to say hi."Mew puffed out her cheeks in pout.

"Wait! You can understand us?" Lucario asked, surprised, as Mew giggled once again. I nodded slowly, still trying to process what was happening before me. The blue and creamed colored Pokémon sighed as he shook his head and rubbed his temple with his paws.

"Slowpoke..." Mew mumbled, giving the other a look with narrowed eyes.

"Shut up!" Lucario growled, shaking his fist at Mew. After some time passed, I was curled up against a brown colored wall. This was strange, almost incomprehensible.

"What's your name?" Mew asked. I shook my head in response. I didn't know my name. I didn't even know I have one or if I ever had one. Maybe...

"You don't have one?" Lucario questioned. I shook my head again to answer his question. "Do you know who you are then?" I shook my head once more. "Than do you remember how you got here?"

I looked down at my now visible hands, taking in every detail I've never seen before. "It was dark..."

"Dark?"

Nodding slightly, I whispered, "It was dark for a long time."

"For how long?"

"Don't know..."

"Do you have a mama or a papa?" Mew asked this time. I blinked several times in confusion, cocking my head to the side. What was a ma... ma and a papa? "Then how about this?" Mew chimed happily as she clapped her paws together. "You can stay here with me and I can be your mama!"

"Mew! What are you talking about? You can't be her mother!"

"And why is that, Lucario?" Mew huffed exasperatingly with her hand on her hips as she hovered eye level to the other Pokémon.

"She's a human and you are a Pokémon," The blue Pokémon growled angrily as his voice became louder with each word. I covered my ears to muffle out their voices. I wasn't used to so much noise. I didn't like it either.

"So what? Others have raised humans as their own, then that means so can I."

I then shut my eyes tightly and felt my body start trembling until I felt a paw on top of my head. I quickly stopped and opened my eyes, looking up slowly to see Lucario with his paw on my head, stroking my hair back and forth slowly. He averted his gaze away from me as he muttered, "Sorry."

I felt a sense of warmth and comfort well up inside me. I shot up and hugged him by the waist tightly, which shocked the Pokémon by the sound of his voice. "He-hey, what do you think are you doing? Let go of me!"

Mew giggled at the scene, earning a glare from the other Pokémon. She floated over and patted my head. "I know what name you can have,"she declared.

"Oh, and what would that be?" Lucario became irritated from being hugged by a human of all things. However, she was just a child, perhaps around five years old. Thus, Lucario decided to let it slide. But just this once!

Mew smiled and declared happily, "Luna."
