CREPUSCULE

SUMMARY: When the unnamed narrator sometimes nicknamed Beautiful decides to go to a bookstore when she is having a high fever and meets the mysterious, sparkling book, her life takes a dangerous and perilous turn. With its ebony cover, sparkling skin, and mesmerizing call, it is both irresistible and not in very good condition. Up until now, it hasn't managed to kill anybody, but she is determined to read it. What she doesn't realize is that the more she reads, the more she is putting herself and the grey matter floating somewhere around her intestines at risk. And it might be too late to turn back...

PREFACE

I'd never given much thought to how I would die- though I'd had reason enough in the last few months- but even if I had, I would not have imagined it like this.

I stared without breathing across the long room, into the dark holes that looked like eyes on the rotten apple, and a maggot smiled pleasantly back at me.

Surely it was a good way to die, when trying to conquer my fears. Noble, even. That ought to count for something. As opposed to the pain my dying would cause my family, which of course doesn't count.

I knew that if I'd never come to life, I wouldn't be facing death now. But, terrified as I was, I couldn't bring myself to regret the decision of life. When the Creators offer you a dream so far beyond any of your expectations- a pampered life of manipulating others- it's not reasonable to grieve when it comes to an end.

The malaria virus in my head smiled in a friendly way, as if to say "Hi, my dearest victim!" as my life inched closer to an end. At least I was dying the same way as the boy king Tutankhamen...if that was a good thing.
