"Perseus."
Percy turns around at his name being called. When he sees who it is he breaks out into a grin. Jason Grace, star football player. Slinging an arm over Percy's shoulders they make their way down the hallway, girls looking, swooning, and guys watching, jealous.
"So, Perseus, got a girlfriend yet?" Jason says, laughing to himself.
"No, Jason, I do not have a girlfriend."
"Sucks man." Jason looks genuinely upset. Percy however could not care less. He didn't like a lot of the girls at school as they lacked a lot of substance. They're as shallow as a clam pool, which is to say, not very deep. They all looked the same, and dressed the same that it made it hard for Percy to differentiate between different girls. Both take a seat at an empty table in the quadrangle. Jason ploughs through his lunch as Percy merely grazes.
"What's wrong, buddy? You're not eating, that's bad."
"It's nothing, I'm just sick of Latin, my grades are falling."
"Don't worry," Jason says, mouth full of bread. "You're a brainiac."
"Wow," Percy replies. "You should seriously think about a career in motivational speaking."
Jason smiles, "I really should."

Physical education for Percy is the best part of his day, apart from lunch. All they had to do was either kick around a ball, or throw around a ball or just do laps around the oval.
"Now, kiddies, today we will be playing soccer."
A collective groan sounds out through the gym. Percy's moan included too. Soccer was fun, but so overplayed, to the point where the whole class could probably play with their eyes closed. Mr Mumford, the teacher doesn't seem to hear or care about the sighs.
"No, ladies, pick teams, and play nice."
Half an hour later Percy is near dead. He is quite terrible at soccer but doesn't like anyone pointing it out. So he just runs around the court, making it seem like he is doing something useful in order for his team to win. They are down three goals to five. Percy sighs and wipes the sweat off his forehead with his shirt.
"Perseus Jackson," a voice, Mr Mumford's booms across the gym. "Come here."
Percy walks over, becoming increasingly nervous about why is being called up. His palms grow sweaty. Everyone in the gym has stopped what they were previously doing, the soccer ball in the corner, forgotten.
"Yes, coach?" Percy says quietly.
"This arrived for you," Mr Mumford says gesturing into his office.
Once inside Percy sees one orchid plant. It's in a blue pot. The flowers are a pristine white. Mr Mumford picks it up and shoves it into his arms. For a second Percy is angry that coach is handling such a beautiful plant with such aggressiveness.
"Get those out of my sight. Put them in your locker, I have allergies."
"Yes, sir."
