Hi guys! This is my very first fanfic ever! So please be nice and don't flame or anything. Please rate and review as well as favorite and follow! All the characters except Alex belong to Rick Riordan. The series also belongs to him too. I hope you guys like the story and don't worry, the POV's of the rest of the crew will be coming too.
Alex's POV
If there's one bad thing about fate, it's that it's inevitable. The idea that free will is an illusion is a scary thought. Especially for someone like me.
But, I believe that if we try hard enough.
Push past all the trials. Struggle through hell, and keep going. Fight till our last breath. Make our own choices instead of following destiny.
Even fate can't control us.
I'm rambling though. Let me start from the beginning.
My name is Alex Wang and I'm sixteen years old. Oh, did I forget to mention that I'm a demigod too? A child of Apollo to be exact. Though, I was a special case.
I came to Camp-Half Blood a little bit after what the older campers seemed to regard as the "Second Titan War", which definitely explained all the catastrophes that had happened about a year ago. I was one of the very new demigod children that showed up after what we called the "Baby Boomers" of demigods. You see, apparently we were all being claimed right away so there's always new recruits for the Camp coming every day.
So, that special case I mentioned earlier. Yeah, well, apparently the amazing hero status of a being a demigod didn't really apply to me. To be more exact, I was a failure as a being one of Apollo's kids. By that, I mean I can't do ANYTHING a typical demigod child of Apollo can do. That includes anything art related to fricking archery! Like seriously, who knew the gods could make a mistake when it comes to making demigods. Especially my Dad, whom I've heard was quite the flirtatious god when it came to courting mortal women.
Which explains why I have so many half-siblings.
Though, I guess I shouldn't say I don't have ANY talents. There's one in particular that's actually pretty cool and very rare among the children of Apollo. My only special talent is the fact that I'm a healer. Now, obviously ALL of Apollo's kids are healers. But, I'm a little different from the rest. Instead of needing to use incantations, special healing paste, and ambrosia or nectar, I use the life energy from the sun and light itself to heal all kinds of injuries. Sometimes, I can even use my own life force, but it's a pretty dangerous thing to try.
Either way though. Let me start from the day everything began.
I was in the Big House checking the inventory of all the herbs and special ingredients Chiron had to make all kinds of healing remedies and potions. Since war with the Romans would be coming soon, Chiron wanted me to prepare and make sure we had a great big surplus of medical supplies around for the medics. And by medics, I mean just me. With my special ability, none of the Apollo campers had to be stuck in the backlines anymore being doctors. All my siblings would be allowed to go to the frontlines with everybody else and fight the war that I can never fight.
"Well, fifty pounds of ambrosia…check. Thirty gallons of nectar…check. Ten boxes of unicorn horn shavings…check." I muttered. "Yup, got all of the supplies we need."
I marked down all the medical supplies we had on the clipboard and started to write down an official report to give to Chiron which I found to be a total drag. It was then I felt a small tug on my pants. I looked down to see a little girl holding a princess doll and a dragon doll.
"Alex! Are you done yet?" The little girl whined. "You promised you'd play Princesses and Dragons with me!"
"Sorry Sophia." I smiled. "I just finished. We can play now."
Sophia squealed in delight and began to run around me in circles. Sophia was a daughter of Demeter and was only seven years old. Apparently the satyr that found her said she had a powerful scent. Way more powerful than a seven year old girl should have. Chiron guessed that she was going to grow up to be a powerful child of Demeter, which I found easy to believe since she could make plants do what she wanted just by talking to them. One time she made them actually help me out with cleaning up the Big House which was really cool.
She had short brunette hair that was about shoulder length. Her eyes were a dark green color which made me think of forests. And she had one tooth missing which I had to pull out for her since she said it was bothering her.
Well, bottom line, Chiron thought she was too young to start training and had me become her twenty-four hour babysitter. That means she was my responsibility and that I'd be taking care of her and protecting her during the war. Which I had no problem with. She looked up to me like a big brother and I thought of her as a little sister.
"OK Alex. You be the Princess and I'll be the Dragon!" Sophia demanded. She thrust the Princess doll into my hands. "Now, pretend you're stuck in a tower while I fly around and come save you!"
"Alright then." I laughed.
I sat up on the nearest bed and perched my doll on the bed post.
"Help! Help me!" I said in a shrill princess voice. "Oh will someone save me?"
"I'll save you!" Sophia yelled. "Here comes the dragon!"
Sophia started to run around me making airplane noises and jumped onto the bed snatching the doll off the bed post.
"I saved you!" She screamed. "I saved Princess Alex!"
"Yes you did!" I laughed.
I picked her up and started to spin her around while she giggled like a maniac. We both fell on the bed and she started to jump on my back.
"You're best Princess every big bro!" She grinned. "No boy I know ever wants to be the Princess."
"I'm only the Princess because I think you're best Dragon ever." I said while poking her in the belly. "And it's only because none of the other boys are as cool as me."
She started to laugh and it made me happy I could make her happy. Especially after losing her father in an accident, I felt she needed someone to look after her. I sat there watching her play with her dolls more and it made me a little sad that the world might possibly end. She was too young to have to die. I prayed to the gods that Percy, Annabeth, and the rest of the Seven would succeed. I wished I could help them out though instead of being stuck here.
Suddenly outside I heard a loud commotion going on. I sat upright and tried to listen again. It sounded like there were people arguing. Loudly. I got up off the bed and Sophia immediately hopped off too and followed closely behind me like she always did.
I opened the door of the Big House just to find outside all my siblings forming a big circle. And I heard inside the circle there was a fight going on.
I ran towards the circle.
"Break it up! Break it up!" I yelled. I broke through the circle to find two guys inside. One was on the floor while the other one was standing over him. "Hey! Knock it off!"
The one standing turned around to face me and I immediately felt anger boil inside of me.
It was my half-brother Jesse.
Jesse came to Camp around the same time I did. I used to think he was pretty cool until I found out he was making fun of me to everybody else behind my back about me not being a real hero. Jesse was literally the most popular camper out of all the Apollo kids. Heck, he was the most popular in camp ever since Percy, Annabeth, Jason, Leo, and Piper left. He looked exactly what a stereotypical Apollo child looked like. He had blond hair in a comb over and baby blue eyes. He was as buffed out as a male model too. And I only knew that because he's always taking off his shirt to impress the girls around camp. He was sixteen like me. His mom was the head of a record company so he was loaded and could always afford the best designer clothes.
Unlike me. I looked nothing like my other siblings. I had somewhat short jet-black hair and dark brown eyes. I wore regular t-shirts and black jeans with Vans shoes all the time. I didn't have a lot of money and could only afford a few jackets and hoodies and stuff. Heck, I wasn't even the same ethnicity as the rest of my siblings. They were all mostly White, though there were a few other races too. but I was literally the only Asian one around. Like I said though, maybe Apollo messed up when he fathered me. I didn't fit the description of a normal Apollo child.
"Well lookie here, we got the NURSE of the camp to come and stop this fight!" Jesse exclaimed. "Why don't you step aside and let us real heroes settle this."
The Apollo campers all started to laugh at my little nickname which got me pretty angry. But I held it back knowing I didn't want to strain the relationship with my siblings even more. I wanted them to start accepting me and I couldn't do that if I started something against them
I looked over to see who the kid Jesse was beating on to notice it was my other sibling Owen.
Owen was two years younger than me. He had a short military style cut blonde hair that he had to have cut because he'd lost a bet to Jesse. He was shorter than me and sort of skinny too. He looked pretty fragile, but he was pretty decent with a bow. He was one of the newest additions to the Apollo cabin and still didn't really know how to fight very well. He was one of my very few siblings who didn't ignore me or treat me like an outcast. I noticed he had a black eye and a cut lip that was bleeding pretty badly.
I glared at Jesse with the deadliest look I could muster.
"Why are you picking on Owen?" I said. "He's new and hasn't done anything to hurt that inflated ego of yours."
"Oh, no, it's because while I was flirting with one of the Aphrodite girls, he wasn't watching where he was going and happened to step on my new Supras." Jesse explained.
He pointed down to his brand new designer shoes and I saw a small scratch on them. That just made me completely fed up with his drama queen attitude.
"So let me get this straight." I was beyond annoyed with Jesse. "You're beating up your own brother because he stepped on your shoes. Are you an idiot? Or are you really just a dumb jerk."
Jesse wasn't smirking anymore. He scowled at me and started to step closer until he was right in front of me. I had forgotten he was taller than me, but I didn't care.
"Watch what you say punk." Jessed glared at me. "Before a real demigod's gotta teach you a lesson. I don't care if we're brothers, I'll kick your butt all the way to next week."
"Bring it." I growled.
We both brought our fists back and were about to punch when we were interrupted.
"Stop it! Now! Or else I'll assign both of you stable duty." Spoke a new voice.
My siblings made way for our cabin councilor Will Solace who had barely arrived on scene.
"What's going on here?" Will questioned. He looked down at Owen and shook his head. "Who did this to you?"
"Jesse." Owen replied.
"Why you lit-" Jesse snarled.
"Jesse. You've got stable duty all this week and next week." Will said. "Better start cleaning now."
Jesse gave a dirty look to first Owen, Will, and then me.
"Alright! Everybody go to your next class, or else you're all gonna get in trouble with Chiron." Will ordered. "Hurry up and go!"
The rest of my siblings started to disburse and each headed to their next activity or class. Will helped up Own who winced and started to touch his black eye. Sophia skipped up to Owen and hugged his leg.
"Are you OK?" She asked innocently. "That boy earlier is mean."
"Yeah, I am." Owen grinned sheepishly "And you're right kid. He is one mean dude."
I walked over to Owen and put my hand on his forehead. I concentrated and absorbed the sunlight around me and used the energy to picture Owen the way he was before he had been beaten up. A bright yellow light glowed from my hands and after a few seconds, the light faded away. I took my hand off Owen's head and he was good as new. He started touching around his face and had a look of amazement in his eyes.
"Alex, I don't care what Jesse says. Your healing ability is really cool." Own stated.
That made me feel better knowing that there was at least another sibling that didn't think I was a disgrace or anything.
"Thanks." I said earnestly.
"Owen, you should probably head to your next activity." Will suggested. "I need to talk to Alex anyway."
"Alright then." Owen said. "I'll see you both later."
Owen than walked off towards the lake, probably for his canoeing activity. I turned towards Sophia and bent down to look her in the eyes.
"Sophia, you should go back to the Big House." I said. "It's time for your nap OK? Your big sister Katie will be coming over soon to read you a story, so you should get ready OK?"
"OK!" Sophia smiled. She gave me a hug and skipped back towards the Big House where I saw Katie standing at the door waiting for her with a book in hand.
I got up and faced Will who was carrying a quiver full of arrows and a bow.
"What'd you want to talk about?" I asked.
"Follow me to the stadium." Will replied. "We'll talk there."
Will and I were practicing our archery. Well, he was practicing. It was more like I was completely sucking. There was a reason I'm not on the frontlines of the war.
I pulled back an arrow and aimed straight at a target that was about twenty feet away from me.
"I'm leaving Camp, Alex." Will said calmly.
That surprised me and I shot the arrow straight out of the stadium.
"Aw man, there goes an arrow." Will complained.
I turned around and looked at Will in disbelief. How could he just up and leave the Camp. He was one of my very few friends and one of the only one of my siblings that actually treated me with kindness.
"Why?" I asked. That's all I really wanted to know I guess.
"I'm eighteen now Alex. I got accepted to NYU, and I want to try to attend college." Will sat down and stared out at the sunset. "After this whole war and end of the world business is over. If we manage to win and save the world. I'd like to go to college and have a shot at a normal life."
"I guess you're right." I agree. "I mean, who doesn't want to live a normal life here?"
I sat down next to Will and stared at the sunset too.
"I mean, I get that we're demigods. But we're also kids." I said sadly. "We're not soldiers. We shouldn't have to live such short and horrible lives."
We both sighed and stared at the targets that were riddled with arrows.
"So, why are you only telling me?" I asked.
"Because hopefully if everything works out, I'd like you to be the head councilor for Cabin 7." Will stated simply.
"What?" I said dumbfounded. "Why me?"
Will looked at me and smirked.
"Well, because I think out of all our siblings, you're the only one that hasn't grown a big ego after this whole year." Will chuckled. " I mean, could you imagine Jesse being cabin councilor?"
We both shuddered at that thought. He'd probably use his position to inflate his already god-like ego even more.
"Is that the only reason?" I asked again.
Will paused for a second.
"It's also because I have faith in you that you can probably change things for our Cabin." Will smiled. "Maybe break that stereotype that us Apollo kids are really stuck up. Maybe keep us grounded."
I nodded but didn't say anything. I was gonna miss Will. He was a real brother to me. I hated thinking what it'd be like without him there, but I knew I'd have to live up to his expectations not only for him, but for myself too. I desperately wanted to change things too. And maybe now I'd finally get the chance to.
There was a silence between the two of us. It stayed that way for a few minutes before Will got up and started to head out of the stadium. I grabbed his bow and quiver full of arrows.
"Wait!" I shouted. "You're forgetting your stuff."
Will just kept walking.
"Use it to practice." Will shouted back. "Give it back to me later."
Then he was gone and I was left here alone. I stared at the bow and arrows and felt anger surge inside of me. I tossed them away from me knowing it'd be useless to practice with the bow and arrow. I got up and walked up the stairs into the stadium seats and took a seat. I stared back at the sunset when I decided to do something I hadn't done in a while. I was gonna pray to my Dad.
I closed my eyes and put my hands together and started to pray.
"Hey Dad? Are you there?" I asked. "It's uh, me Alex. You know…your son? The one that you made kind of, well…useless."
I know it was kind of pointless to try praying since Olympus was closed down. Heck, I could even be talking to myself this whole time. But it was worth a try.
"Well uh, Dad. I need your help." I continued. "This war is coming and I'm afraid all those who are close to me might get hurt, or worse. I don't think I'm strong enough to help them all. I want to be stronger to protect everyone. I'm tired of being useless. I just want to be useful for once. Please…help me."
I opened my eyes and found that nothing happened. Nobody showed up. No golden light and my godly father descending from the heavens. Just me in an empty stadium.
"Gee thanks Dad." I said bitterly. "Thanks for the help."
I headed down the stairs and started to pull out the arrows from the targets. Right when I was about to grab the last one, an arrow suddenly hit the target from behind me. I literally jumped away from the target and was shocked when I saw the arrow. It was golden.
I turned and saw a guy that looked like he was between the ages eighteen to twenty. He had blonde hair styled in a comb over. He wore a white V-neck shirt with khaki pants and black Vans shoes. He wore some Ray Bans sunglasses and had Dr. Dre's Beats headphones connected to an IPod in his pocket. He had a bright white smile that reminded me of the intense light of the sun.
It was Apollo.
"Dad?" I said in amazement? "Is that really you?"
Apollo walked over to me still grinning and took off his Ray Bans and put them in his pocket.
"The one and only." Apollo grinned.
"You're uh…not what I pictured." I said. "You're a lot younger looking than I imagined."
Apollo put his hand on my shoulder and led me over to two random recliner chairs that appeared out of nowhere with two cokes in the cup holders. We both sat down in the chairs.
"Well, I am technically over thousands and thousands of years old." Apollo chided. "But I like to look as young as I feel. Like they say, every time the sun rises, it's a new day."
Apollo laughed like he said something witty. I was glad my Dad had finally appeared to me, but I felt sort of angry with him as well as confused about why he'd never contacted me before.
"Dad, how come you've never tried talking to me before now?" I frowned at him. "All of your other kids have met you before plenty of times except me."
Apollo's grin faded and instead he looked sullen. Which was sort of odd considering he was the sun god.
"Well, I had to because fate demanded it to be so." Apollo explained. "You have a very important destiny ahead of you, so I was not allowed to interfere with your path."
I mean, I guess I could understand. But that didn't make it hurt any less. Gods break the rules all the time anyway. How bad of a punishment could he have gotten if he just called me every now and then to ask me how I'm doing or something like that.
"What do you mean I have an important destiny?" I was confused. "I'm just a medic. What important destiny could I be part of?"
"Well, here's the news Alex." Apollo continued. "Your destiny leads you to the homeland. You must join the Seven on the Argo II and stop Gaea and her Giant children."
I sat there trying to register what my Dad just said.
"What?" I said in disbelief. "T-that can't be. I'm not a fighter. I'm a healer."
I got out of my chair and started to back away. Apollo got up and tried to get closer to me but I just backed away even faster.
"Look, Alex. I know it's tough, but you gotta do it. You being there will tip the scales in our favor." Apollo said calmly. "Besides, didn't you want to help your friends? Now's your chance to get stronger and help save them."
"I-I didn't mean for it to be like this though" I backed up against a wall and could feel my legs shaking and my heart beating faster and faster. "I just wanted to make sure nobody died. Not go on the greatest quest of all time with the fate of the world in my hands."
I fell on my knees and started to panic.
"I'm not brave Dad!" I muttered. "I'm too scared. How could I possible help tip the scales?"
I looked at the ground in shame. I always wanted to look good in front of my Dad and here I was scared out of my mind. Then I felt a hand being placed on my shoulder. I looked up and saw Apollo on one knee beside me, looking at me with confidence.
"Look Alex, being brave doesn't mean you're not scared." Apollo assured. "Being brave means you are scared. Really scared actually. But you do the right thing anyway. It's alright to be afraid, but as long as you do what you must, that's all that matters. I believe in you son. You can do it."
I felt more reassured then I had in a long time. I didn't know if it was his godly influence or if I had suddenly been injected with liquid courage, but I knew he was right. I got what he meant. I was scared, sure I'll admit it. But if me going on this quest means I can save my friends, then I'll have to take the risk. No matter how big it is. Maybe Will was right. It was time for me to change things for the better. It just means it would have to be a lot bigger than what I originally thought.
I got up and Apollo looked at me with pride in his eyes. I was terrified to do this. But if I didn't, a lot more people were gonna get hurt. I couldn't be a coward and have that on my conscience for the rest of my life. If I can save people, I have to do it.
I took in a big breath and let out a loud sigh.
"Alright then." I agreed. "Let's do it."
"First, you gotta be issued your prophecy." Apollo said. "Then, your quest will begin.
Apollo put his hand on my forehead and suddenly a light enveloped the both of us. I felt my world get turned upside down and everything spun around so quickly. Suddenly we were in the forest where the Camp played Capture the Flag. I noticed we were on a trail that led up a hill where I could see the entrance to a creepy cave.
I was guessing that's where the Oracle, Rachel Elizabeth Dare, lived during the summer.
"OK Alex, now you just gotta go up the hill and get your prophecy." Apollo pointed up the hill. "I'll wait for you here."
"Alright Dad." I started to make my way up the trail but stopped. I had one last question. I turned towards Apollo. "Dad, can we talk about Mom sometime?"
Apollo's face grew a little pale. But he nodded.
"Sure Alex." Apollo said softly. "Next time we meet after today."
I nodded and started to walk up the trail again.
I still felt like I couldn't do much to help the Seven. I was just the medic. But if my Dad says I can do it, then I need to believe in myself and help in any way I can.
When fate hands you a hard obstacle, it's all about rising up to the occasion.
Hey guys, the story may be a bit slow in the beginning, but I promise you it gets better the further you read into it. Lot's more action and story ahead, so keep on reading! :) Remember to rate and review as well as favorite and follow! Please and thank you!
