Wilde Rose
I opened the door immediately after I heard the knocking, just to find what seemed to be a messenger standing on the porch. "Are you Roxas Strife, Sir?" I nodded "Yeah I am. What do you want?" The messenger cleared his throat "Well I have a letter for you." I had a bad feeling that I already knew what this was about.
I asked anyway. "Why?" He shuffled around in his bag and pulled a letter out of it that was sealed with the seal of the military of my kingdom. "You are the person that Captain Axel Sinclair wanted to be informed if something happened to him." I took the letter from him with shaking hands may throat going dry at the knowledge that I was right with my former assumption.
"Thanks." "My apologies Sir. I'll leave you now." With that the messenger bowed his head and turned on his heels while I closed the door again. Swallowing the lump that had formed in my throat I cracked the seal open and took the actual letter out of the envelope and began to read.
We officially inform you
in this letter about the death of
Captain Axel Sinclair.
He died as a hero
for his fatherland.
I couldn't hold the tears back any longer. Letting the letter slip out of my hands I dropped to my knees big tear drops falling down my face. Sobs wracking my small form as I let my sorrow out.
I already kind of knew that he wouldn't come back to me because the flower he had given me before he left withered a few days before. He had said that as long as that rose blossomed he would be alright. That hadn't stopped me from hoping that it didn't mean anything.
Still sobbing like a little child, the thought of never seeing him again registered in my brain filling me with an unnatural cold. A hero the letter said, was that supposed to make me feel better? I thought to myself when I was flooded with a grim determination.
Wiping at my eyes to hold the tears momentarily at bay I stood up. I grabbed the letter and a candle that stood on the plain wooden table. It was the only source of light in my small cottage. I had lit it earlier this evening as it had already been sunset when the messenger arrived.
Holding the letter over the little flame I remembered how Axels hair had looked so much like a flame itself.
I didn't care that I almost burned my fingers, actually I didn't even feel the heat of the fire because of that inner cold that had an icy grip on me. Before the letter turned completely into ashes I let it and the candle fall to the ground. Watching for a little while I made sure that the fire would grow without any more of my doing.
I then turned towards the wooden door opening it and escaping into the cold night air. Not looking back I kept my gaze straight ahead. I started walking. My steps never wavering until I came to the edge of the cliff that stretched along the path from the nearest village to my cottage.
I stopped to look over my shoulder at my housing to make sure it was ablaze. Fire had always reminded me of Axel because he was always made me feel so warm.
Turning around to face the cliff again I took a deep breath. I can't live without you Axel. One last tear rolling down my cheek when I jumped.
