If I Bowed

Being a quiet, thoughtful person, Raven likes to wonder. But sometimes her innocent wondering turns into morose what-ifs. And the one moment she never fails to come back to is that fateful day, when Trigon invaded and almost—no, he did destroy everything. It was just though her friends' belief in her that it didn't stay like that. But it was so, so very close. There was one moment that could have tipped the scales either way. It haunts her, that moment, when she knelt beside Robin, shaking and terrified and fearful and scared, and almost did not stand again. Almost let him win. Almost bowed.

If she had, Earth would never have been reborn. Her friends, if not brutally enslaved, would have been cruelly massacred. Azarath would have no doubt been the next to go; both her homes destroyed in a single motion. She would not be killed, but kept for amusement. A slave. Her scars, both emotional and physical, reopened. Her heart broken, soul shattered.

She does not wonder about this often, but when she does, her insomnia flares and for hours, she'll walk around trying to find what she doesn't know she's searching for. She jumps at every sound, fearful that Trigon is back to punish her; she flinches at every touch.

Robin thinks about that time as well, when all they had was lost. He's scared too, but accepts his fear and harnesses it, using it as an anchor to his humanity. He remembers and moves on, but never forgets that they did lose, but had the strength to come back and win.

So when Raven's thoughts turn to darkness and she can only try to hold herself together, he's there. He holds her and walks with her and gets her to eat and brings her to watch the sunrise; but most of all, he reminds that she did not bow, she was able to defeat her father after a lifetime of believing that she couldn't. He makes her remember standing up to him, becoming the angel she was always destined to be. He tells her no prophecy is certain and that she is no one's pawn or vessel.

He never lets her forget that she is Raven, the woman who saved the world when she didn't think she could, who keeps their team sane, and he loves her. And for that she is eternally grateful.
