The sun was setting and I watched from the kitchen window as the sky became a light lavender. I closed my eyes and bit my lip. His face flashed through my mind, shaggy red hair, orange tinted goggles which covered his beautiful blue eyes, and the cigarette hanging out of his silly grin. I clutched the counter and took a deep breath, letting his face fade away.

"Mommy, when is daddy gonna be home?" Mail asked, because she was only three most of her words came out wrong. I looked down at her and smiled; her red hair was pulled back in a ponytail and her green eyes were intense with sadness.

"Daddy's coming home tonight, sweetie." I sighed hoping I was right for her sake. Mail held her arms up to me and grabbed at the air.

"Hold me." I bent down and picked her up; her chubby arms went around my neck and her chubby legs around my waist. "Sing." She said. "Bout L." I laughed softly and started to hum, carrying her off to her room.

"There once was a man named L, smarter then anyone I ever met. He used those smarts to catch the bad guys and make the world safe for you." I laid her down on her bed and sat next to her. "There once was a man name Mello, and though his actions were bad his motives were good." She yawned and closed her eyes. "There once was a man named Matt who was smart, funny, and sweet. Strangely her looked just like you." I hummed again until I was sure she was asleep. I left the room quietly and moved into the kitchen where I sat for at least an hour, just staring at the blank TV. The door opened finally and I jumped off the sofa quickly, launching myself towards the door.

"I'm home." He said, running his hand through his messy white hair. I jumped into his arms and he held me in a tight embrace.

"Nate, I was worried sick!" I said, closing my eyes and breathing in his sweet smell. He sighed and kissed my forehead.

"I'm really sorry Allison, my job is just so demanding and all." I smiled up at him and shook my head.

"It's alright I understand." I sighed and rested my head on his shoulder.

"Mail, is she asleep?" I nodded. "Well there aren't anymore cases so I'm here for a while." He kissed me tenderly and cradled me. "Mrs. River." He said, his lips still pressed to mine. I giggled and pulled away, heading towards the kitchen.

"You must be hungry, hun. I'll cook you something." I smiled to myself. "She loves her song." Nate chuckled softly.

"It's good she knows her father, even if she only knows him by Matt." He sighed. I chewed on my lip a little and then I felt Nate's arms around me. "Come lay with me a while."

"Alright." I smiled and kissed him on the cheek again.
